Google buys up a server tech company

Google logo.Hardly a day passes when Google isn’t buying some new startup or a service that has just exploded into mainstream popularity. Late yesterday the news broke that the search giant had just purchased yet another company, but this time it was a name I’d never heard: Agnilux.

After the implicit “who the hell is that,” I dug around to see what I could find. It turns out Agnilux is a server hardware development company, some are guessing a chip developer, that’s packed to the gills with former TiVo and Apple employees. Agnilux was also founded by former employees of P.A. Semi, another chip developer that Apple bought in 2008.

It suffices to say Google is getting a lot of talent in this little-known acquisition. The TiVo ties have raised questions about Google TV, but as far as anyone knows it’s just one guy in Agnilux that came from TiVo. Still, when we don’t much, it seems like anything could be reasonable.

Get TiVo on your PC for $69.99

Nero LiquidTV.PC DVR systems can be a pain to setup, and often require several trips back to Best Buy or your electronics store of choice for the components you forgot or didn’t know you’d need (you do have a tuner, right?). The Nero LiquidTV serves up everything you need to make your PC into a DVR system worthy of living room status.

For $69.99 you get a tuner, a USB IR receiver, TiVo software, a TiVo remote, and a one-year subscription to the service. That last part is really the one letdown for the package. After a year you’ll be paying $99.99 to continue your service. If you don’t need cable and just want to pull down your PBS for recording, Nero’s system comes with a radio tuner. It doesn’t have a great antenna, but I’m sure you could find a way to fix that little problem.

As for the software, it’s essentially just what you’d find in a TiVo set-top box. You don’t get any of the extras, like photo viewing or a music player. It does what you need, but again, the yearly subscription fee kinda sucks.

Bouncing Around the Web

In case you missed it, here’s what’s Bouncing Around the Web:

Western Digital’s My Book family just jumped up to 2TB of storage. 2 freaking terabytes! You can carry around a USB 2.0 2TB external drive for around $330. 2 freaking terabytes! Is it me or can you recall when you didn’t know what the hell a terabyte was?

I can guarantee I didn’t know what a terabyte was the last time I conquered this game. One of my absolute favorite games growing up is now available on my phone. id Software just released a ported version of Wolfenstein 3D for the iPhone. My productivity just went out the window.

A company is now producing Boxed Water. Water in a box? Really? I can see where they are going with this. Boxed Water is safer for the environment than plastic bottles. I get it. But Boxed Water? Really? I’ll stick to the tap.

TiVo and Blockbuster are joining forces. The market of people willing to pay several hundred dollars for a DVR and also pay $15 a month to rent movies will be thrilled. I guess I’m not one of them.
