Pure Digital Thinks iPhone Users Will Still Use Their Flip

The Flip HD.Just a few days before the iPhone 3GS hits consumers, Pure Digital Technologies, who makes the Flip series of digital camcorders has updated their software for improved sharing support. The Flip has been the camcorder of choice for many, especially for YouTube enthusiasts.

The new Flip software adds the ability for users to create channels with individual security settings, allowing them to share their videos privately, instead of relying on YouTube and other social networking sites to do so. Private sharing does not support HD playback, but for many that’s not the draw of the Flip. It’s ease of use they’re after.

Pure Digital has also announced an app for the iPhone that will allow iPhone owners to view the privately shared videos right on the phone. It’s an interesting move from Pure Digital, particularly with the video recording and editing features available on the new iPhone. Add to that the App Store approval process, which the Flip app will have to pass before making it to consumers, and it sounds like Pure Digital is pretty worried about their market share.

Their concern is probably reasonable, though the Flip line still offers enough benefits to keep them in people’s hands. For now, at least.

The Loop Gives Wireless Control To Your Home Theater PC

The Loop by Hillcrest Labs.Today Hillcrest Labs made good on a device they showcased back at CES 2007 – The Loop. It’s a wireless control device designed for home theater PCs, Apple TV, or the PS3 and comes in just one shape…a loop.

The circular remote sports just four buttons and a scroll wheel and makes use of an RF dongle to transmit controls to your favorite living room web browsing device. Essentially Hillcrest Labs took a look at a Wiimote and the way it controls the Wii menu systems and created their own. The Loop also senses motion, so you don’t have to be pointing the device at anything (how do you point a circle?). Just tilt your wrist in the direction you want to move.

For $99 you can get rid of that wireless keyboard and mouse rig in your living room.

Jimmy Fallon/John Krasinski Demo Project Natal

Last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Xbox’s Creative Director for Project Natal, Kudo Tsunoda, showed up with a prototype Natal to demo in front of a live crowd. It’s very cool to not only see the Natal in action, but to see it played by people who are obviously not directly connected to the device’s development (or completely in control of the demo).

The demo starts with the breakout style game shown at E3. Control looks a little laggy, and there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve. Kudo could play just fine, but both Jimmy Fallon and John Krasinski whiffed their first swing at the ball. One of the first things Fallon noticed when he stepped up to play was his hair, which changed from Tsunoda’s shoulder-length mop. Pretty cool, even if his exclamation sounded more than a little scripted.

The second demo showed off Burnout: Paradise, a game Microsoft has adapted to Natal just to showcase the precise control capability of their new peripheral. As you’d expect, Kudo took off without a hitch and flew through the streets. Fallon, on the other hand, maintained reasonable control for all of four and a half seconds before blasting into walls. All four people for the demo jumped in and out of the “driver’s seat” fairly smoothly, though the Natal did take a moment to recognize foot placement for putting the pedal to the floor.

So what of the red suits? It’s hard to say whether everyone threw on the Beastie Boy jumpsuits as a theatrical gimmick or because it made them that much easier for Natal to read. My guess would be the second. No one wants to demo the hottest news in the gaming world just to watch it flop live.

In any case, this is the first we’ve really seen Natal debuted by “consumers,” and it’s at least good to see that it works, even if the situation was constructed on Microsoft’s terms. Hopefully as development continues we’ll get to see more elaborate demonstrations in less controlled environments.

Apple Keynote Video Cap Shows Schiller’s Hubris

Hero?

Just in case you missed the event, or you don’t like liveblogs, or you just want to hear people boo AT&T for the lack of tethering and MMS support, Apple has posted video of the WWDC Keynote Address.

You might be interested to know that the picture shown on the apple webpage is saved as “hero20090608.” Must have been that earthshattering iPhone update he announced. You know, the one that looks just like the last generation and the software update that adds basic functionality like cut and paste. Very heroic.

Click the pic above to find the image on Apple’s servers, telling title and all. Who said Schiller wasn’t humble?

(PS – all you photography types…calm it down. It was a joke.)

Brando’s Slick SATA HDD Multi-Media Adapter

Brando SATA HDD multi-media adapterIn the world of SATA adapters, few are as slick (in both product and price) as Brando’s SATA HDD Multi Media Player Adapter. More than just a dock, Brando’s product allows you to stream 1080i straight to your TV.

The unit connects to a computer via USB, allowing you to dump files straight to the HDD of your choice. There are also adapters for an SD card or flash drive, with the same streaming capability. You also don’t have to have Brando’s new toy connected to a computer to allow playback, which is ideal for folks who haven’t quite made the jump to a media center at their TV.

If you’ve got a big digital video collection, or just like to share photos with friends and family, Brando’s $69 price tag is a sure fit for your budget.
