iHome Studio Series iP1 Brings Decent Sound at Hefty Price

The iHome Studio Series iP1.iPod/iPhone speaker sets are a dime a dozen, usually offer tinny sound in a reasonably mobile package. On rare occasion, they’ll even include some extra features (omg it has a radio!!!) for a few extra bucks. For the most part, though, these things are unimpressive in terms of both sound and user experience.

iHome, a weathered player in the market, hopes to change some of that with their Studio Series iP1. The unit is flashier than most, sporting some “museum quality” acrylic finish between two 4-inch woofers with 1-inch tweeters stacked on top. The unit is driven by a 100-watt amp, giving it enough power to put out some decent sound. An included video port allows you to run video from the attached device while pumping sound through the iP1.

$300 is a little more than I like to spend on a sound system for my apartment, but this thing could be great for the college freshman in your life. The Studio Series iP1 will release some time this July.

AT&T Could Cut iPhone Plan By $10 to Win Subscribers

AT&T to lower iPhone plan?In completely unshocking news, AT&T may be planning to reduce the cost of the iPhone plan by $10, reportedly to boost sales. With the impending release of OS 3.0 (already on beta 5), the sole provider for Apple’s baby would probably see plenty of converts.

This latest price-cut comes after plenty of others, all of which have aimed to get more iPhones into more hands (around 17 million just last year). When the iPhone first hit, it was retailing for a massive $599 for the 8GB model. I remember laughing out loud when I saw that number and wondering how long before it would drop by several hundred. That day has come and gone, leaving the provider set to save patient consumers an extra $240 over the two year contract for the phone.

Now if only we could get Apple to drop to the BOGO offers we’re seeing for the RIM’s Storm. If only.

NFS: Undercover Powerslides to the iPhone

NFS: Underground on the iPhone.Yesterday, EA mobile released their newest race title, ported for the iPhone. Need for Speed Undercover follows the plot and mechanics of most other NFS titles: infiltrate a underground smuggling/racing ring, race through a few cityscapes, destroy some cop cars on the way. The most interesting part of the game is probably the controls.

Unlike most racers, NFSU has no gas pedal. Your virtual driver just puts the thing to the floor and trusts you to handle the rest. Pressing the screen activates your brake while you steer by simply tilting your phone. As you can imagine, steering can feel a little mushy, a setback EA countered with fairly simple course design. Swipe your finger up on the screen for a nitrous boost, down to enter the Speed Breaker, which is essentially bullet time for cars. I’m glad to see they were thinking of controls when they designed the game. The iPhone as a gaming device can be fairly limited, but obviously there are creative ways to get around the drawbacks.

The only problem I see is the $10 price tag. Sure it’s a complete game, stuffed with 19 cars and a load of customization. Ten bucks still seems stiff for something that I would basically use as a time-killer on long trips in the car or while I’m waiting for a movie to start.

Apple: Hate Your Parents, Don’t Hate Us

Parental controls keep dead babies out of kids' hands. There’s been much ado about Apple’s iPhone application approval process of late, mostly surrounding the Baby Shaker app and Trent Reznor’s NIN app. Both applications feature “objectionable content,” though one is probably more widely objectionable than the other. It seems like Apple may have learned from iTunes though, and they’re passing the censor scepter to someone else: parents.

With the iPhone OS 3.0 release comes parental controls, giving adults everywhere the ability to add more you-can’t-tell-me-what-to-dos to their certainly heaping collection. By putting censorship in the hands of the user, Apple can open the app store to more mature content, which, as Gizmodo notes, will be necessary if they want to make a serious push toward gaming. Of course, Apple will probably still avoid apps like Baby Shaker. Corporate associations with dead babies just can’t be good for business.

Myst Hits the iPhone

Myst hits the iPhone.Cyan Worlds has reportedly ported their mega-classic mind bender, Myst, to the iPhone. As a long time Myst fan, this is definitely great news. I’m also impressed to see that they pared the thing down to 700mb. That seems like a lot, but Myst felt huge, and running it on new hardware has got to take some serious space.

As for gameplay, the experience should be fairly flawless. Cyan reworked the controls for a simple touch navigation. They’ve also added auto-saves, bookmarking, and quick access to the game’s hint guide.
