      How Smart Can the iPhone Get?

      Images from Apple's recent patent filings.According to the popular Mac site Macrumors.com, Apple has filed a couple of patents that point to significant evolution in the iPhone hardware. The iPhone has been criticized since release for lagging behind other ‘smart’ phones, a claim they hope to refute with the impending OS 3.0 release. The new patents point to first-in-market technologies that could further expand the IQ of Apple’s juggernaut.

      The first patent deals with new accelerometer-based motion technology that would allow the iPhone interface to change as the phone senses various activities. The patents suggest that the phone could determine whether you are jogging or performing other physical activity and adjust the user interface to include gestures for functions such as answering phone calls or changing tracks in iTunes. The images filed also show a transition to enlarged contact lists during motion, making sifting through contacts a bit easier for a shaky hand.

      Other interesting features point to video conferencing with the addition of a user-side video camera. Video recording of any kind remains unavailable on the iPhone until OS 3.0 later this summer. Of course all of this is speculation, but the patents do give us some small window into the research coming out of Cupertino.

      Bouncing Around the Web

      Western Digital’s My Book family just jumped up to 2TB of storage. 2 freaking terabytes! You can carry around a USB 2.0 2TB external drive for around $330. 2 freaking terabytes! Is it me or can you recall when you didn’t know what the hell a terabyte was?

      I can guarantee I didn’t know what a terabyte was the last time I conquered this game. One of my absolute favorite games growing up is now available on my phone. id Software just released a ported version of Wolfenstein 3D for the iPhone. My productivity just went out the window.

      A company is now producing Boxed Water. Water in a box? Really? I can see where they are going with this. Boxed Water is safer for the environment than plastic bottles. I get it. But Boxed Water? Really? I’ll stick to the tap.

      TiVo and Blockbuster are joining forces. The market of people willing to pay several hundred dollars for a DVR and also pay $15 a month to rent movies will be thrilled. I guess I’m not one of them.

      Just Released – XROAD G-Map

      The first turn-by-turn GPS app for the iPhone was released this week from a company called XROAD. And to pretty glowing reviews:

      The iPhone has unquestionably dominated the mobile phone industry for the past two years. One of its biggest advantages over other devices is the long list of applications of every variety that can be downloaded to it. There are “apps” for everything from keeping track of your Twitter feed to following your favorite baseball team. Finally, after nearly two years, a developer has released the first real-time, turn-by-turn navigation application for the iPhone. XROADS G-Map ($19) is clearly the best real-time navigation option for an iPhone right now, but we ran it through the same tests we would a stand-alone TomTom, Garmin or Mio system to see how it fared with the big boys of navigation.

      While there is room for improvement in this product, this is also the first attempt at a real-time turn-by-turn navigation application for the iPhone. As long as XROADS is willing to follow what other developers have done by offering free updates, this app is sure to take a chunk out of the GPS navigation market.

      Wow, that’s not what I expected for the iPhone’s first crack at a turn-by-turn GPS app. Kudos to XROAD. And at $20, this app is a great deal. But there are some obvious improvements to be had.

      First, and foremost in my mind is voice routing. When I drive I am usually paying attention to the road and listening to the radio. I don’t mind getting interrupted to let me know a turn is coming. In fact, I expect it. I can’t be expected to be watching the road and a map at the same time. It’s not safe or fun.

      Also, the lack of street names is tough. Especially when driving on crowded city streets. When there are many streets coming up, it is nice to be able to be able to check the street you’re turning onto before you get there. And even better, the street before that.

      Knocks aside, this looks to be a winner which is hopefully a good sign of things to come. XROAD did the best they could do for now without using all the hard drive space on the iPhone. Some small improvements here and there would blow away the competition. Especially when the competition costs about 10 time more.

      Just Released – Tap Tap Revenge 2

      Tapulous recently released it’s follow-up to the very popular Tap Tap Revenge called Tap Tap Revenge 2. Tap Tap 2 comes with some great visual enhancements as well as a much larger library of free songs.

      The download catalog features over 150 free new songs. There’s something for everyone: rock, dance, electronica, pop, hip hop, even country music. The catalog includes hits from Death Cab for Cutie, The Crystal Method, Daft Punk, Weezer and Nine Inch Nails. Every Thursday, we add more awesome free tracks from featured artists.

      The overall game play experience is improved. They have added “tap and hold” and “multi-tap” on some of the more difficult levels. Also, Tapulous added a few new features like a career mode to go along with the online play.

      Another nice addition is the kids mode. If you’re comfortable handing over your iPhone to you little one, they will definitely enjoy playing at a level appropriate for them.

      Tap Tap 2 looks to be a great follow-up to the ever popular Tap Tap Revenge. I would definitely recommend this app for everyone.
