Bypass Apple’s App Approval with Easter Eggs

The Baby Shaker app.Apple’s iPhone App Store approval process has created a flurry of news with its stringent requirements, the latest of which involved an eloquent rant by Trent Reznor. It’s pretty hard to disagree with Reznor on this one, though we may have done so with more carefully chosen words (you’re too old to care so much about your rocker persona). The apps that do and don’t make it through seem arbitrary at best, and near fascist at the worst.

Developer Jelle Prins has found a way around the mess by hiding the “worst” of his app with a nifty little easter egg. Prins’ App, Lyrics, which displays the lyrics of songs in a user’s playlist, was initially rejected because it would display all lyrics, even the obscene ones. Approval came only after Prins installed a profanity filter.

That’s not the end of the story. Alongside the profanity filter, Prins scripted an easter egg that enables profanity at the user’s discretion. Just head to the “About” page on the app, swipe your fingers down three times and confirm you want to see the naughty lyrics. Prins said the egg was easy to implement because it’s a difficult thing to notice in the source code.

Prins also says the app was likely approved due to a lack of manpower on Apple’s part. Lyrics ties in to an online database to monitor usage. That database showed only one use during his approval process, meaning just one person fired up the app, searched for a few profanities, and then pushed the thing through when he couldn’t find any. Scouring lines of code for things like Prins’ easter egg isn’t even on the map.

Of course with all the attention on Prins and his little workaround, I would not be surprised to see the app pulled until 3.0 parental controls go live. So much for sticking it to the man.

Mama said knock you out – Punch-Out released on the Wii

Punch-Out WiiPunch-Out is now released for the Wii and I couldn’t be happier.

I look forward to the hours upon hours that Little Mac and I are going to spent together over the next few months and years. Though our road to the championship will be tough and filled with Hippos, Tigers and Bulls, we will eventually prevail and win the hearts of many. I feel bad for what I’m about to do to Glass Joe, Piston Hondo, and Soda Popinski but I feel worse about the limited amount of time my wife and I are going to spend together over the next couple weeks because, like most of you, I’m going to be spending every waking moment playing Punch-Out.

So if you’re like me, waste no time and go get Punch-Out. Looks like the only thing missing is Tyson. And I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it, Bob.

Mario Kart Teaches Students Not to Text and Drive

Texting while driving.Vail Christian High School in Colorado hopes to teach students not to text and drive by employing Mario & Co. for a few driving lessons. In a simulation set up by the school, students take the Wii’s motion-sensing wheel in one hand and a cell phone in the other and attempt to text.

Vail is just one of 20 schools using this same program to help teach driving safety. Sounds great, but Mario Kart? Your biggest consequence for a missed turn is falling off the map and getting replaced by a Koopa. Also, I can’t help but think mixing the challenge of a video game with texting is a terrible idea. The first thing I thought when I heard the news was, “I bet I could do it.” The school has added another element of challenge to a driving game, and if we know anything about gamers, they’ll try to beat the best we can throw at them.

One of the tested students said, “I ran into a lot of things and it was very stressful.” Was it $9.6 million stressful? I doubt it.

Sony Still Losing Money on PS3 Sales

PS3.According to Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda, the cost of Sony’s Playstation 3 is still 10% higher than the price. In the US that means Sony is losing $40 on every PS3 they sell. It’s certainly no secret that consoles typically follow this pricing pattern on launch, but to still be losing after two and a half years is surprising.

Of course things could be worse. Just a year ago the cost-to-price ratio was an estimated $100 loss per system. Then again, the PS2 did just sell more units than the PS3 last month as a result of a PS2 price drop. Rumors suggest a similar cut could be coming to the PS3 which would set the cost-to-price rift back up to serious levels. So maybe things couldn’t be a whole lot worse. Hopefully Sony has something big in store for E3.

NFS: Undercover Powerslides to the iPhone

NFS: Underground on the iPhone.Yesterday, EA mobile released their newest race title, ported for the iPhone. Need for Speed Undercover follows the plot and mechanics of most other NFS titles: infiltrate a underground smuggling/racing ring, race through a few cityscapes, destroy some cop cars on the way. The most interesting part of the game is probably the controls.

Unlike most racers, NFSU has no gas pedal. Your virtual driver just puts the thing to the floor and trusts you to handle the rest. Pressing the screen activates your brake while you steer by simply tilting your phone. As you can imagine, steering can feel a little mushy, a setback EA countered with fairly simple course design. Swipe your finger up on the screen for a nitrous boost, down to enter the Speed Breaker, which is essentially bullet time for cars. I’m glad to see they were thinking of controls when they designed the game. The iPhone as a gaming device can be fairly limited, but obviously there are creative ways to get around the drawbacks.

The only problem I see is the $10 price tag. Sure it’s a complete game, stuffed with 19 cars and a load of customization. Ten bucks still seems stiff for something that I would basically use as a time-killer on long trips in the car or while I’m waiting for a movie to start.
