Princeton Students Hate The Kindle DX

Kindle DX.Remember that pilot program for the Kindle DX? Yeah, that thing at Princeton where Amazon subsidized some of the cost of a Kindle DX for a small group of students and Princeton paid the rest. Despite the early rutting from everyone involved, it looks like the Princeton side of the deal is none too happy. One student is so displeased with the device that he called it a “poor excuse of an academic tool.” Snap!

The e-readers have been in student hands for two weeks across three classes. The Daily Princetonian claims many students are “dissatisfied and uncomfortable” with the Kindle DX. Most students cite the lackluster annotation features, though a lack of page numbers has also proven a bit of a setback. One professor added concerns for transitioning from physical to digital forms. His own texts are riddled with highlights and scribbles for noteworthy passages. Transferring those notes to the Kindle would take days.

Despite the inconvenience, students have not yet decided to opt out of the pilot program.

Axe Makes MMS Sexy

This story will be particularly interesting to all of you newly-minted MMS-using iPhone owners out there. Axe is using MMS to hype its new Day and Night line of products in very clever, very sexy fashion. The image below is a before and after of an Axe ad featuring the new product that requires an SMS to complete the image.

The concept is simple, really. Show a nearly nude picture of a beautiful blonde with all her naughty bits replaced by white boxes. The ad has simple instructions: “To complete this ad send Axe to 2345 after 9pm.” The SMS generates a picture response, allowing to view the full image.

Say what you want about the state of advertising and the objectification of women. This thing is clever. Damn clever.

Theaters Hope Tech Can Foil Pirates

Movie theater.Movie theaters are looking into IR light as a way to help combat piracy from movie-goers with cameras. Japan’s National Institute of Informatics has requested help from Sharp, which came up with the following method.

By projecting IR from behind the movie screen, movie theaters can wash out a camcorder’s image by flooding the sensor with light that is undetectable to the human eye. The light passes through the screen through small holes designed for sound. The resulting effect is a grid of light over the image, rendering the cam unusable.

There is, of course, the problem of getting every theater to install these things, which will likely further increase ticket prices in a declining market. It was a nice thought guys. Really, it was.

Amazon Enters The Accessories Market

Amazon Basics.Amazon’s seen some relative success in the electronic hardware market (though how much success they just won’t say) and it looks like the company would like to see a little more. The online everything store is launching its own line of electronics accessories called AmazonBasics.

So far the site only has storage media and cabling, but you can also find guides for everyday setup and a troubleshooting. Amazon is also showing off new “Frustration-Free” packaging that supposed to be “easy to open and easy to recycle.”

The site, on the other hand, is probably frustration-inducing for companies selling marked up cables through Amazon. Those guys just won’t be able to match the $8 HDMI cables without compromising their precious perceived quality. Amazon must see some pretty nice cash down the line to be willing to fleece old partners like this.

Research Firm Predicts iMac, Macbook Refresh

Apple iMac.I really need to get a job at a research firm. From what these people produce, I’d say their typical day isn’t entirely unlike that of a psychic. You make some vague generalizations, write nonspecific predictions about products that have months of rumor behind them, and then make some bank.

The latest comes from Wedge Partners, which seems to think the iMac and Macbook are due for a redesign “in the next several weeks.” The firm says the iMac will head toward a “thinner, organic design, likely with smoothed or rounded edges,” while the Macbook redesign “is likely to be limited.”

Well isn’t this brilliant. So Apple won’t be completely abandoning their design progression for the past decade? They’re refreshing the white Macbook like rumors have been suggesting for months? What shocking news.
