      Palm Hopes to Win Customers With More Apps

      Palm Pre App Catalog.It’s no secret that much of the iPhone’s success comes from its development community. There are other great touchscreen smartphones out there, but none with application support behind the iPhone.

      That’s no secret to Palm, either, and they’re hoping to offer similar support (albeit on a much smaller scale) to win some customers to the Pre. At launch the Pre sold some 50,000 phones and saw 150,000+ apps downloaded in that first weekend. That’s a solid start, but it won’t be long before Pre owners will want more.

      Developers released some new Pre apps yesterday, in the midst of the Apple mayhem. The new titles included LikeMe, a restaurant/entertainment recommendation and rating service, and a sports news app for baseball fans. The Pre catalog is still smaller than tiny (like fewer than 50), but the catalog is still in beta, and only a few developers have the kit. As soon as it goes public, I’m sure you’ll see a more rapid influx of applications. Palm should make that happen soon – there’s sure to be a big rush of developers hoping to lure iPhone 3GS customers in the coming weeks.

      Apple Updates Their Notebook Line

      Macbook Pro 15-inch.Phil Schiller’s Keynote address is happening as I write this, and he’s just unveiled the new 15-inch Macbook Pro. It looks like Apple is rethinking the Macbook/Macbook Pro strategy, going to a more diverse product lineup for the Macbook Pro. All of the unibody Macbooks now sport the Macbook Pro brand, starting at 13 inches.

      So Apple has officially dropped the Macbook tag down to just one white, polycarbonate spec which got a much quieter update than the keynote Macbook Pro update today. In terms of price, Apple’s new lineup looks like this.

      White Macbook – $999
      13-inch Macbook Pro – $1199
      15-inch Macbook Pro – $1699
      17-inch Macbook Pro – $2499
      Macbook Air – $1499/$1799 ($700 price cut on second-tier)

      Obviously upgrades are going to cost you, but the update looks to streamline Apple’s approach to the notebook market. Apple has also lifted the ceiling on upgrades to their notebooks, allowing you to get up to 8GB of RAM and a 3.06 Dual Core 6MB L2 Cache. Other upgrades are storage size, including the option for a 256GM SSD instead of a 500GB HD.

      Apple has also added an SD slot to all of the Macbook Pros, making them more digital camera friendly. This does mean exclusion of the ExpressCard slot, which is now only available on the 17-incher.

      Almost forgot – Firewire 800 is back. The new Macbook Pros will be available today, as soon as the Apple Store is back up and running.

      Dell Studio XPS 13 – Now with Ubuntu!

      XPS 13Dell has started to offer their XPS 13 with the more and more popular Ubuntu. Ubuntu, for those who don’t know, is a linux-based operating system that has a reputation for being fast, stable, and virus free. Ubuntu also runs many of the same software applications that Windows does like Firefox and Open Office.

      Anyway, here are the details from Electonista:

      PC, notebook, monitor and related hardware manufacturer Dell has recently began offering its Studio XPS 13 notebook PC preloaded with the Linux-based Ubuntu operating system. The 13.3-inch notebook otherwise has the same key specs as its Windows Vista-powered counterpart, including the same 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, though some of the available options between them differ. For example, users can upgrade to a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo on the Ubuntu XPS 13, while those who opt for the Vista system have a choice of a different 2.53GHz and a 2.66GHz CPU.

      And it’s quite affordable at $1099.

      Sprint: Not Enough Pres For Launch Demand

      Palm Pre.According to Sprint CEO Dan Heese, there just won’t be enough Palm Pre’s to meet demand at the device’s launch. Obviously he’s chosen his words carefully, suggesting there’s going to be massive demand for the Pre, or maybe Palm just hasn’t made very many of them. Either way, the company is throwing all of their chips in on this phone, and rightly so. Without it, Palm’s doomed.

      I’d like to think the Pre will be successful, but it’s going to be a tough sell. Sure, it looks like a great phone, and a lot of people are excited about it, but who will buy it? Sprint customers are a great place to start, but that means no growth for the wireless provider. The loyal Palm users are another likely demographic, but that doesn’t get a great device in the hands of new users. Your final hope is first-time smartphone users, assuming they can be lured from the iPhone or a Blackberry, both of which are potentially cheaper than the Pre.

      Zune Phone Rumor Was Just That

      You have chosen...poorly.The latest rumor concerning the Zune Phone turned out to be a prank by some Apple fanboy. Well, you got us, Apple fanboy, and a whole bunch of other sites too.

      The mixup was the result of a subtle name change by the man in question. There is indeed a Twitter account run by a Microsoft Office 2010 marketing team: office2010movie. The account used yesterday to post fake info concerning the hush-hush Microsoft “Pink” project? officethemovie. It’s tough to keep all these damn Twitter accounts straight. Our apologies if we gave you a halfie.
