      Research Firm Predicts iMac, Macbook Refresh

      Apple iMac.I really need to get a job at a research firm. From what these people produce, I’d say their typical day isn’t entirely unlike that of a psychic. You make some vague generalizations, write nonspecific predictions about products that have months of rumor behind them, and then make some bank.

      The latest comes from Wedge Partners, which seems to think the iMac and Macbook are due for a redesign “in the next several weeks.” The firm says the iMac will head toward a “thinner, organic design, likely with smoothed or rounded edges,” while the Macbook redesign “is likely to be limited.”

      Well isn’t this brilliant. So Apple won’t be completely abandoning their design progression for the past decade? They’re refreshing the white Macbook like rumors have been suggesting for months? What shocking news.

      Analysts Say No iPad In September

      The Apple iPAD?Despite all the rumors flying about an impending Apple tablet release, analysts don’t expect we’ll see one at the glamorous September Apple event. Instead, you should be looking for an iPod Touch/Nano refresh that includes cameras for both models and possibly a video cam on the new iPod Touch, bringing the flagship mp3 player in line with the iPhone.

      The Apple tablet rumor got a whole lot bigger back when Borders posted a survey regarding ereaders that referenced an Apple device. Since then it’s been a lot of speculation, but nothing truly official has surfaced. The camera rumor, on the other hand, has more substantial evidence. There are countless cases with camera ports all in the same place, along with insider info that the cam is coming. I’d say it’s definitely a safer bet.

      There’s also the nature of a tablet release for Apple. It has to be good. It has to be really good. The netbook craze is already starting to decline as the models get stuffed with more and more features and look more and more like actual notebooks. Convincing the world to reconsider what is essentially an MID will take an exceptional product, and that’s something Apple may not be ready to roll out by September.

      Stand That Macbook On End

The Bookarc from twelvesouth stands your Macbook on end for a desktop space-saver. There’s also an added bonus – you get a speed increase just by closing your notebook.

      Now granted, you’re also losing a secondary screen when you flip your notebook shut, but it might be nice to give that graphics processor a little break here and there. Who knows, you also might like the extra desk space.

      If there’s one gripe I have, it’s that the thing costs $50. That’s obviously a tribute to the sexy design, fat price tag mantra that’s so popular in Cupertino. The stand does look really nice, though, so maybe it’s worth it for some of you.

      Macbook To Get A Makeover

      The polycarbonate white Macbook.When Apple bumped the 13-inch unibody Macbook up to “Pro” status, you knew they were planning a refresh for white polycarbonate version. It’s been the lone wolf sporting the Macbook name for some time now, and the body design is three years old.

      That’s all about to change, according to a rumor posted at AppleInsider. Apparently Apple is going to redesign the Macbook and add a few more models to the lineup. The polycarbonate Macbook, it turns out, is one of Apple’s best selling devices. In fact, it beats out just about everything other than the iMac on Apple’s online store. That’s probably due to the $999 price tag. New Mac users find the price appealing enough to make the switch, and frankly, it’s a pretty good deal.

      I wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen within 4-6 months. Adding an even lower model would allow Apple to continue to perform well in the face of economic crises and steal more users away from Windows machines.

      Browsers Beware: Chrome Is Coming For You

      Chromium logo.I’ve been looking for a new browser recently, mostly because nothing’s really cutting it. I like the gesture support for my Macbook in Firefox 3.5, but it’s a crazy buggy release, the worst I’ve had from Mozilla, and its been driving me crazy. The spinning-lollipop-of-death when I’m browsing through Google Reader is enough to make me wish I had more hair so I could pull it out. Safari’s nice, but it’s missing my gestures and feels sluggish at times. I’m not an Opera guy, so just don’t ask. There is an up and comer that I’ve got my eye on, though, and I’m anxiously awaiting a stable build.

      I’m talking about Chrome for OS X, which is known in development right now as Chromium. I’ve been playing around with a few of the most recent builds and I have to say, the browser just keeps getting better. They still haven’t implemented most of the gestures I love (seriously, rotating two fingers to flip through tabs is wonderful), but it seems like new features are making the pre-alpha build almost every day, which can only mean good things for the future.

      As a recent article on CNet points out, Chromium is also kicking some Apple ass in the speed department. Chromium comes in a solid 34% faster than Safari, which used to be king on almost any OS X machine.

      It’s strange, I never really used to place much importance on my browser, but its become almost as important as the operating system. I spend so much of my time within a browser’s confines that it makes me curious just what Chrome OS is going to do for mobile computing. I love the sleek simplicity of Chrome (I also own a PC) which is only enhanced by the pure speed of the whole thing. Once it gets going on my Mac, I just might be in love.

      For those of you looking to make a change, the guys at TechCrunch have put together a little program with an Automator script that will automatically check to see that you have the latest version of Chromium installed.
