      iPad background.Apple product launches are always a little bittersweet. The products are usually great, and if not they’re called Apple TV. But along with the products you have to put up with Apple fanatics talking about how this thing you don’t have will revolutionize the world. To some extent I believe the hype but there is that intense feeling that it’s a bunch of bullshit. Ray Bradbury gets along just fine without technology, doesn’t he?

      While I’m not ready to write off technology, I do like to keep things in perspective with little pranks like this. Gizmodo has 8 great false backgrounds for your crazy friends’ iPads. Drop one of these bad boys on that pristine new tablet and watch the horror cross the owner’s face when it lights up.

      Steve Jobs shows up for estimated 700,000 iPad day one

      Steve Jobs iPad.It was a big day for Apple. It was a big day for fanboys (and fangirls). It was a big day for publishers. Alright, it was a big day for just about everyone. Yes, even you haters, because like it or not the iPad is here and it’s a pretty big deal. It’s the first ultra-portable device that’s capable of handling all of your day to day tasks, be it business or entertainment.

      The iPad is such a big release that Steve Jobs himself showed up at the Palo Alto location to survey the damage for just under an hour. Analysts are setting estimates for day one sales around 700,000 units, a huge chunk of the supposed couple million Kindles in the wild. By comparison, the iPhone sold just 270,000 units when it launched.

      The iPad does have a leg up in that it has access to the iPhone OS App Store. Along with iPhone apps, the iPad will have its own set of apps designed to take advantage of a larger screen size.

      Pandora Universal app looks great

      iPad Pandora app.With the iPad launching tomorrow there are a lot of apps to get excited about, not the least of which is Pandora. Pandora has been a huge success on every mobile platform. It’s also saved me from many a dull road trip with a virtually limitless pool of musical styles. The app got an update this week to include the iPad version and it looks great.

      The update includes a large screen version for the iPad, making the artist description and album art that much more accessible. The update also adds album artwork for every station and improves streaming for quicker song selection and less service dropouts. I gotta say, I’ve never had serious problems with streaming, though it does occasionally seem slow, so the improvements will be great.

      The really nice thing for the iPad is that everything is on one screen. There’s no flipping back and forth for stations and artist info and all that. The new app seems focused on users getting to know the artist’s their browsing which will be great for Apple with iTunes integration.

      iPhone to iPad converter is cool, isn’t real

      iPhone-iPad converter.I’ve never been one for playing practical jokes on April Fool’s day. Part of my problem is that I’m chronically unaware of the universal line, you know, the line that you just shouldn’t be crossed for public things like pranks. I’m great in small group settings. I can usually figure out when I need to shut up or what’s just far enough outside everyone’s comfort zone to be funny without being offensive. Give me an open forum, though, and I’m stuffing feet in my mouth like so many bacon infused pancakes.

      The internet tends to not wow me with it’s April tomfoolery either. The jokes are expected and most of them are pretty bad. This thing, though, was pretty cool. It’s an iPhone to iPad converter for blowing up your iPhone to iPad size. It runs about $125 and is totally fake so don’t try to buy one. I just thought you might like a look at one of the better jokes of the day.

      My experience with broadband penetration

      Ethernet cabling.There has been a lot of talk, both in government and among non-profit groups, about bringing the web to everyone. Rural areas still struggle with slow connection speeds and a lack of quality service. I’ve been having some problems with my service over the past few days that make me really appreciate what it is to have broadband basically whenever I want it.

      I have a pretty cool job. I work from home, I get to write, I do a little programming. All of those things, though, require the internet, and for most I need a pretty fast connection. I’m actually writing this post from my phone. It’s great to have that option, but cellular service is still pretty slow and the data fees are too expensive for a lot of people. It’s also ridiculously cramped typing full posts on a touchscreen keyboard. Tablets could change that, but there’s still the 3G speed cap to deal with and the cost of a monthly data plan.

      With the economy still struggling, I can think of few better ways to stimulate rural and low-population areas, areas typically hit hardest by tough economic conditions, than a rollout of affordable, reliable internet service. When service goes down, it’s tough not to immediately start shopping for better broadband deals. At the very least, I could use the reliable connection. Waiting on yet another modem is painful.
