HyperMac Adds Life To Your New Built-In Battery

Hypermac powering an iphone and macbook. One of the most alarming updates to Apple’s Macbook Pro line this week was the addition (most would call it a subtraction) of a built-in battery. The new battery technology offers improved power durations at one pretty hefty cost: the battery can’t be removed.

It seems appropriate, then, to give you a look at a slick little external battery that could calm your nerves. The HyperMac external notebook battery comes in four varieties: 60Wh/100Wh/150Wh/222Wh at respective prices of $200/$300/$400/$500. While the top tier is certainly pricey for the device, it yields a whopping 8 hours of battery life for a Macbook Pro, 32 for the Macbook Air. Huge.

Speaking of size, you will pay for all that power with a little bit of girth. The HyperMac is definitely small enough to fit into a laptop bag at 10.1″ x 5.91″ x 1.34″ but it weighs in at 4.7 pounds, adding some decent weight to your shoulder. The benefits of all that weight, though, include the ability to power your laptop while the HyperMac charges (freeing up your other Magsafe for use elsewhere in the house) and USB device charging at the same time.

Sanho Corp did its best work offering different price points for different models. I’ve passed on plenty of these things because I just don’t ever need the extra 10, 16, 24 hours of battery life they provide. The 60Wh version is plenty for me.

Jimmy Fallon/John Krasinski Demo Project Natal

Last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Xbox’s Creative Director for Project Natal, Kudo Tsunoda, showed up with a prototype Natal to demo in front of a live crowd. It’s very cool to not only see the Natal in action, but to see it played by people who are obviously not directly connected to the device’s development (or completely in control of the demo).

The demo starts with the breakout style game shown at E3. Control looks a little laggy, and there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve. Kudo could play just fine, but both Jimmy Fallon and John Krasinski whiffed their first swing at the ball. One of the first things Fallon noticed when he stepped up to play was his hair, which changed from Tsunoda’s shoulder-length mop. Pretty cool, even if his exclamation sounded more than a little scripted.

The second demo showed off Burnout: Paradise, a game Microsoft has adapted to Natal just to showcase the precise control capability of their new peripheral. As you’d expect, Kudo took off without a hitch and flew through the streets. Fallon, on the other hand, maintained reasonable control for all of four and a half seconds before blasting into walls. All four people for the demo jumped in and out of the “driver’s seat” fairly smoothly, though the Natal did take a moment to recognize foot placement for putting the pedal to the floor.

So what of the red suits? It’s hard to say whether everyone threw on the Beastie Boy jumpsuits as a theatrical gimmick or because it made them that much easier for Natal to read. My guess would be the second. No one wants to demo the hottest news in the gaming world just to watch it flop live.

In any case, this is the first we’ve really seen Natal debuted by “consumers,” and it’s at least good to see that it works, even if the situation was constructed on Microsoft’s terms. Hopefully as development continues we’ll get to see more elaborate demonstrations in less controlled environments.

Apple Keynote Video Cap Shows Schiller’s Hubris

Hero?

Just in case you missed the event, or you don’t like liveblogs, or you just want to hear people boo AT&T for the lack of tethering and MMS support, Apple has posted video of the WWDC Keynote Address.

You might be interested to know that the picture shown on the apple webpage is saved as “hero20090608.” Must have been that earthshattering iPhone update he announced. You know, the one that looks just like the last generation and the software update that adds basic functionality like cut and paste. Very heroic.

Click the pic above to find the image on Apple’s servers, telling title and all. Who said Schiller wasn’t humble?

(PS – all you photography types…calm it down. It was a joke.)

Bouncing Around the Web

In case you missed it, here’s what’s Bouncing Around the Web:

Microsoft BingBing has more market share than Yahoo? You have to be freaking kidding me. Yahoo has been around for ages, has name recognition, and what I thought was a strong base of users. Apparently none of that matters when Microsoft starts advertising its new search engine. Do you think the execs at yahoo are kicking themselves for not accepting the $44.6 billion dollar bid back in 2008? You bet your ass they are.

VW lovers and mini-van enthusiasts rejoice! The VW Routan is going to come with built in Wi-Fi. With a starting price of $29 per month, I imagine it will be an easy sell. Of course, this is just the start of things to come. Everything is going to be its own Wi-Fi hot spot in the future. But for now, having kids just to buy a Routan will not only keep Brooke Shields happy, but also the gadgeteers in the family.

I don’t even know what to say about the new Reebok Vector O Bat. First, is this thing street legal? Because if you ask any young pitcher what’s missing in baseball, I’m sure his first reaction would be to have the baseball coming even faster at his head when it comes off the bat. My prediction? Pain.
