Microsoft Tablet Could Sneak Past Apple

Microsoft Courier.Mum’s not always the best word when it comes to gadgets. Sometimes it can be better for companies to leak information little by little to generate a little excitement and anticipation for a product. That’s never really been Apple’s SOP, but they will occasionally announce products way ahead of schedule. With the rumored Apple tablet, though, the company’s been quiet, and Microsoft just might be positioned to take advantage of the silence.

Today Gizmodo leaked the first news of a Microsoft tablet called “Courier.” It’s a dual-touchscreen device that uses a blend of gestures and a stylus for control. The whole thing is built like a notebook, you know, the paper kind, with a camera on the backend. Gizmodo even has a video to make the thing look much cooler than it actually is.

I’m pretty skeptical about the whole situation. First, the Giz article was written under the byline “The Paperboy,” which, if you read Gizmodo, you’ll recognize is not a regular contributor. There’s also the fact that no one else seemed to get the exclusive news + video (also granted, it was shown at the Gizmodo Gallery), and frankly, the video looks too good to be true. Granted, the whole thing is shot around the alluring concept of being a young design professional. The controls are clean, if a little complicated at times, and show plenty of eye-candy, but that’s how almost every device video comes off. As one Giz commenter reminded me, even the HP TouchSmart looked great over video. It turned out to be a terribly limited platform with somewhat clunky controls.

Gizmodo promises more in-depth coverage on the device as the week goes on. I’ll wait to pass more judgment until I see a hands-on. For now, I think Microsoft is doing something really smart here. Nothing like imprinting the way a tablet “should work” into consumers minds to generate buzz. Apple’s device will have to be truly fantastic to get attention after this.

Is Mayhem! The Herald Of Apple’s Future?

Tyrese Gibson's Mayhem! There was a strange appearance at Apple’s Rock and Roll even this past Wednesday, and I’m not talking about Steve Jobs. It was Tyrese Gibson, an actor from the movies Death Race and Transformers 2. What makes Gibson’s appearance strange isn’t his movies, though. It’s his book.

Gibson made his mark in Apple history when his comic book “Mayhem!” became the first book available from iTunes. Granted, this isn’t a full-fledged novel, but it is the first example of how a book would work in iTunes, and could be an indication of what’s to come. The first episode of the comic comes from iTunes LP, where buyers will get additional video and audio extras along with a stylized presentation of the comic.

Couple this with Jobs’ comments about a multi-purpose device that has an e-reader built in and I say we have more evidence that the Apple tablet is an issue of “when,” not “if.”

Analysts Say No iPad In September

The Apple iPAD?Despite all the rumors flying about an impending Apple tablet release, analysts don’t expect we’ll see one at the glamorous September Apple event. Instead, you should be looking for an iPod Touch/Nano refresh that includes cameras for both models and possibly a video cam on the new iPod Touch, bringing the flagship mp3 player in line with the iPhone.

The Apple tablet rumor got a whole lot bigger back when Borders posted a survey regarding ereaders that referenced an Apple device. Since then it’s been a lot of speculation, but nothing truly official has surfaced. The camera rumor, on the other hand, has more substantial evidence. There are countless cases with camera ports all in the same place, along with insider info that the cam is coming. I’d say it’s definitely a safer bet.

There’s also the nature of a tablet release for Apple. It has to be good. It has to be really good. The netbook craze is already starting to decline as the models get stuffed with more and more features and look more and more like actual notebooks. Convincing the world to reconsider what is essentially an MID will take an exceptional product, and that’s something Apple may not be ready to roll out by September.

Borders May Have Leaked The Apple Tablet

Is this the Apple tablet? There have been a lot of rumors about the seemingly certain release of an Apple tablet. We’ve seen fake pictures, fake specs, projected sales figures, and more fake pictures. One of the only things I haven’t run across in my reading is a possible name.

Borders cleared all of that up with a recent survey regarding e-readers. I’m not sure if the book peddler (really, you can’t call those “sales”) is trying to gauge its eventual demise, or whether they’re trying to find a way to burst onto the ebook scene, but they may have prematurely outed Apple’s tablet and given the thing a name: The iPAD.

I have to say, the name sucks. It truly sucks. But that it’s in a Borders survey regarding e-readers is certain to make several hundred thousand fanboys foam with anticipation.

Rumor Central: Apple to debut $800 tablet this October

Apple NetbookAccording to MacRumors, Apple plans to debut a netbook this October. The rumor has the netbook display measuring 9.7 inches and touchscreen enabled. Here’s MacRumors take on things:

Taiwanese news site InfoTimes reports [translation] that Apple is slated to debut its long-rumored netbook this October. Taiwanese companies Foxconn, Wintek, and Dynapack have reportedly received orders from Apple related to the manufacturing of the new device.

The report notes that Apple is looking to adopt a 9.7-inch touchscreen for the new netbook, slightly smaller than the 10.1- or 10.2-inch screens typically used at the large end of the netbook range.

According to reliable information, Apple will not follow the current market trend (by producing netbooks with screens about 10.2 or 10.1 inches in diagonal length.) Instead, Apple will produce screens with about 9.7 inches in diagonal length. Touch screen will be installed. Wintek will be the main manufacturer of the touch screen.

Exact pricing remains unknown at this time, but the inclusion of a touchscreen and Apple’s history of refusing to compete at the lowest price points suggest that the netbook may be priced at around $800.

Because Apple will adopt touch screen technology on its netbooks, Apple will not target low-end consumers, avoiding direct competition with Acer, Asus, as well as their less-than-500-dollars netbooks. Apple’s netbook (or a “tablet” as many call it,) will probably be sold at around $800 USD each.

Apple has repeatedly stated that although it has been looking at the growing netbook market, it is not interested in releasing a low-end netbook product that produces an inferior user experience as current products do. Other sources have recently “confirmed” that an Apple netbook is in the works, but claim that it will not arrive until 2010.

My take? I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a netbook or tablet coming from Apple soon. The netbook market seems mature enough now that Apple can step into the ring. Apple is never first into any market; they always seem to wait and see how things progress then take whatever has been done and do it better. They aren’t always better, but there’s no question that they usually push innovation.

My concern with it is that at $800, are they really going to compete in the netbook market? It just sounds too pricey. Acer, Dell, and Asus are all producing faster, lighter, more reliable, and cheaper netbooks. And at $250 – $400 a piece, who would want to pay double that?
