      Apple Rumor Roundup

      iPhone 4GWired has a link to a rumor that the next generation iPhone will not be announced/released at the next WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). This is a slight surprise but not totally unexpected. Instead, it goes on to say, is that WWDC will focus much more on the new Mac operating system OSX Snow Leopard, and the new iPhone OS 3.0. The new iPhone is coming, the question is when.

      Two rumors from iClarified. First, the new iPhone OS may actually allow background apps. This could be accomplished by either Apple approving and allowing only certain apps to run in the background or the end user could enable a limited number of apps to run in the background. This is good news for iPhone owners.

      Also from iClarified is the rumor that Best Buy already has the new iPhone in their system. What’s interesting to me is the 3 options available in the Best Buy system. I guess it could be 8GB black, 16GB back, and 16GB white but I’m hoping it’s something more than that. Perhaps 8, 16, 32GB or 16, 32GB and a nano??? Highly doubtful but a guy can dream, can’t he.

      App Watch: Cardstar Manages Multiple Memberships

      Mesa Dynamics' Cardstar.You’ve got your insurance card, your grocery card, your other insurance card, your gym card, your library card, your bulk-supplier-of-choice card…that’s a lot of cards, and there are plenty of other memberships I’ve not even mentioned. Luckily, the clever folks at Mesa Dynamics have programmed an iPhone app to handle all that crap.

      The app, called Cardstar, comes pre-programmed with some 130 merchants and retailers across the US, Canada, and the UK. An app is only as good as its ability to be tailored to personal needs, and luckily Cardstar delivers. The app allows you to add any card that may not already be in the database.

      Even though Cardstar isn’t a particularly new app, I thought I’d post since it’s running right now for free, as opposed to the normal $.99.

      Inmate Adds 60 Years to His Sentence for Having a Cell Phone

      Keep your cell phone out of prison.The Texas penal system has added an extra 60 years onto the prison sentence of inmate Derrick Ross, a three-time burglary felon, for possession of a cell phone behind prison walls. There are plenty of obvious reasons you aren’t allowed a cell phone behind bars, but 60 years? People convicted of manslaughter aren’t held that long.

      Prosecutor Allyson Mitchell claims the additional 60-year penalty will send a message to other inmates. Shouldn’t we instead be wondering how this guy got hold of a cell phone? And how then was he able to keep it? For some reason, it seems the Texas penal system needs to be taught a lesson or two, one that spends taxpayer dollars on something that might improve their justice system for the next 60 years, not just add another felon to the books.

      Machine Beats Hearts Without the Bodies

      Terminator is about to get real.Alright, this thing is awesome. Completely and totally mind-blowingly awesome. Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a machine that allows a pig’s heart to beat WITHOUT THE BODY.

      Yes, heart transplants are cool. Yes, medical tech has come a long, long way in last, I dunno, several decades. But this is something yanked straight from the pages of comic books and sci-fi novels. The video below (easily one of the freakiest things I’ve ever seen) has the machine in action, pumping away so researchers can study mitral valve repair.

      Verizon’s LTE Debuts in 2H 2010

      Verizon's 4G is on the horizon.We’ve been hearing about 4G and Verizon’s LTE for a while now, and it’s kept most of us praying for a Verizon iPhone in the near future. According to Verizon President and CEO Lowell McAdam we’ll be waiting until at least the second half of 2010.

      In a recent conference call, McAdam stated the LTE service would roll out for testing in 20 to 30 markets during the specified time frame. The rest of the nation will have to wait until “late 2013, early 2014.” McAdam wouldn’t say much else, other than to mention a small “pre-commercial” testing on both coasts later this year. Sounds like I’ll have time to pick up the new iPhone later this summer and run through a full contract cycle before a few thousand people led by a man in horn rims with a creepy smile start following me around.
