Unsurprising News of the Day: iPhone 3GS Bumps YouTube Mobile Uploads By 400%

iPhone video recording at the pool. There’s a word that’s frequently omitted from the recent blog chatter about YouTube’s latest upload stats: mobile. It’s an important word, too, especially for a site that sees tens of thousands of uploads per day.

For those of you who aren’t up to date, a recent YouTube blog post claimed the iPhone 3GS has bumped uploads by 400% per day since its release last Friday. Taken out of context, that’s mind-blowing, and at first led me to believe iPhone 3GS users were somehow pushing nearly half a million videos per day through YouTube’s servers. That would be staggering.

In the original context, though, you can see the YouTube team is talking about mobile upload increases, not total upload percentages, which makes this completely unsurprising news. The last six months have seen the first widespread adoption of phones with video paired with data connections capable of uploading those videos. It’s no surprise then that the last six months have also seen a 1700% increase in mobile uploads and the 400% iPhone 3GS stat mentioned earlier. It’s pretty easy to post huge growth numbers from…next to nothing, and it just gets easier when Apple sells a million phones, all with build in video and editing features, all with an easy YouTube upload app.

Now it’s easy to panic and wonder when all of this uploading is going to crush AT&T’s upstream, but YouTube hasn’t released any hard numbers. It’s still 400 percent, which could be 100 or could be 10,000. Even a generous 100,000 videos a day is a lot for mobile video, but compared to the number of mobile users (take the 20 million active iPhone users, for instance) and you’re talking about marginal amounts of data compared to the total upstream per day.

So please, take it easy, and don’t forget to look at the original data before taking fantastical news to heart.

Jobs Gets “Excellent Prognosis,” No Special Treatment

Steve Jobs looking healthy. After having a liver transplant Steve Jobs is reported to have an “excellent prognosis” by the medical institute responsible for the operation. Nice to hear some good news surrounding a pancreatic cancer survivor, even if he is one with the means to pay for the very best in medical care.

The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute also issued a statement with the prognosis claiming Jobs received his liver because he was “the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available.” This was no doubt released to allay concerns that Jobs may have seen special treatment because of status.

Good news for Jobs means good news for Apple, whose stock dropped some 10 points when the CEO announced his leave of absence in January. There had been speculation about his health leading up to the announcement, though Jobs claimed it was a hormone imbalance until he finally had to leave.

Despite his absence, Apple stock has continued to blow up, surging 60% this year alone. Hopefully we’ll see Jobs taunting handicapped grandmothers in his Cupertino parking lot soon.

Woot-Off!

wootJust a quick note telling everyone today is a Woot-Off! If you recall our Sweet Site of the Week – woot.com, then you remember that they sell tons of gadgets, electronics, and knick-knacks for seriously reduced prices along with $5 shipping. But the catch is that they sell only one item every 24 hours. Well, on the grand occasion of a Woot-Off, they put a new item up for sale as soon as the last one sells out. For Wooters(the name affectionately given to those of us who woot), this is the best day of the month, quarter, or year for they can constantly press the F5 button all day and find new items. Maybe not the items they need or want, but they have to find out anyway.

And then there’s the highly, highly coveted Bag of Crap. Wooters will spend all day, all night, and sometimes the next day waiting for the infamous Bag of Crap to appear. You see, when the BOC goes on sale Wooters will rush to put in their order for between 1 to 3 of them and then wait a few days to a week to see what random three, or more, items show up on their doorstep. While the actual BOC will cost between $1 to $3, plus $5 shipping, according to bagsofcrap.com the value of the items in the BOC can range from around $30 to over $1400. Oh, and for full disclosure, expect the woot website to crash while several thousand Wooters all fight to orders the bags of crap.

Doesn’t this sound like something you want to be a part of? I do. Head on over to Woot and keep that F5 button close by. You never know when you might find something worthwhile to purchase. And hey, you may even get your hands on that elusive Bag of Crap.

Star Wars Bookends – May the force hold up your books

Star Wars BookendsI can’t really say if this truly counts as a gadget or not, but I really don’t care. And I can’t really say that I’m the biggest Star Wars fan out there, but I do love the movies. So when someone like me runs across something like this, I have to share it with the world.

The Star Wars Shop has listed these truly amazing “Star Wars Trash Compactor Bookends” for pre-order. Here’s what the Star Wars Shop describes them as:

“One thing’s for sure. We’re all gonna be a lot thinner!” – Han Solo.

The valiant rescue of Princess Leia takes a turn for the worse when our heroes evade on-rushing stormtroopers by jumping down a garbage shoot. The situation turns grim when the dianoga shows up and the garbage compactor’s walls begin to close in! Cast in high quality poly-stone and hand painted to exacting standards. Each is numbered and comes complete with matching certificate of authenticity.

This limited edition measures 6 inches deep, 12 inches Wide and 7.5 inches high, and are well suited for DVD?s, books and graphic novels, and more. The modular aspect also allows the consumer to display them in a number of ways.

Samsung Jet Gets 2M Preorders

Samsung's popular Jet.Just a week ago we were lauding the success of the Palm Pre with its 50,000 unit opening weekend. Earlier today we got news that the iPhone 3GS has sold 1M units at launch, despite having the “smallest” launch for the device to date.

Samsung enters the fray walking tall and carrying forty pound sledge: the Samsung Jet. According to Samsung, they’ve received 2M preorders for their WinMo smartphone. The Jet runs on the same 800MHz processor as the 3GS, though the iPhones is underclocked. The Jet also has an AMOLED screen and a 5MP camera, two improvements over the iPhone. It comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 installed, which isn’t everyone’s favorite touch platform. An update to 6.5 could be a serious improvement for WinMo users.

The Jet preorder sales make it the largest handset order Samsung has ever seen. The phone will be available at the end of the month.
