In-flight Wi-Fi becomes more popular, bans certain services

In-flight Wi-Fi.In-flight wi-fi is getting a lot more popular, as in popular enough for mass consumption. Unfortunately, that also means airlines are trying to anticipate all the ways wi-fi can be used for evil as much as it can be used to make money. It’s unfortunate because really they have no idea what they’re doing.

Take the case of John Battelle, a happy father on a recent United Airlines flight who just wanted to say goodnight to his kids. He jumped on video chat and was promptly approached by a stewardess who told him that in-flight video chat is illegal. Illegal. Why? The terrorists of course. They could use it to coordinate an attack, you know, since video chat is the only way to communicate in-flight. Email definitely wouldn’t work. Neither would AIM. Twitter. Facebook. Ya know, I’ll stop there. No reason to beat this thing into the ground.

So what’s a curious guy to do? To the Internet! Which is exactly what I did. Responses starting pouring in. Including one from a pal at the State Department, who echoed my basic goal: To use video chat to tuck my kids into bed isn’t a crime. Or at least, shouldn’t be.

The flight attendant just showed me the United policy manual which prohibits “two way devices” from communicating with the ground. However, the PLANE HAS WIFI. To combat this, not unlike China, United and other airlines have blocked Skype and other known video chat offenders. Apparently, they missed Apple iChat. Oops.

Oops, indeed. You can bet this will be an ongoing battle between the airlines, our government, and the consumers, most of whom are under the impression that airlines screw them in every way possible.

Palm PDK will boost the WebOS App Catalog

Palm is preparing to launch the WebOS Plug-in Development Kit next week, a developer tool that should have dropped with the Pre. It’s still a great tool, though, one that will supposedly allow developers to port applications from the iPhone OS to WebOS in a matter of days without any performance hangups. You see why this should have been released earlier?

Since the advent of WebOS, Palm’s greatest weakness has been its App Catalog. There just isn’t enough there, mostly because the company didn’t get its developer kit out for months after the Pre launched. That left a lot of people waiting for something good before switching over. In the meantime we’ve seen a new iPhone, two juggernaut Android phones, and a slew of other releases that are much more attractive. The PDK will give the App Catalog a much needed boost, but realistically, it’s probably too late.

I still can’t shake the feeling that Palm should have waited 12 months on the Pre release. It’s not like they’re making significant money off the phone and it’s mostly because of a really poor software experience. I don’t mean WebOS is a bad OS – it’s actually quite the opposite – but without any kind of app support the phone looks archaic next to its competitors.

AT&T CEO remains realistic about the iPad

The iPad sparked a lot of unrealistic expectations. There were talks of revolutionary reading experiences and the saving grace of the publishing industry. AT&T isn’t drinking the kool-aid, which actually gives the company a tiny measure of respect in my eyes. When asked about Apple’s tablet, CEO Randall Stephenson said he sees it as a “Wi-Fi driven product,” which is why AT&T won’t be offering any wireless contracts for the device.

“My expectation is that there’s not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription,” said Stephenson. I couldn’t agree more. The last thing I want to worry about for the iPad is paying another $15 or $25 every month for a service I’ll rarely use. Hell, most early iPad adopters are likely going to be iPhone owners. What good would that contract do for them?

AT&T has enough trouble providing quality service to its iPhone users. Let’s get the company focused on that before we worry too much about tablet contracts, shall we?

Android Marketplace has superstar apps too

Car Locator on Android.You don’t have to be an iPhone developer to make a bunch of money from mobile applications. Take Edward Kim’s Car Locator. The free version of the app has been downloaded 70,000 times, while nearly 7,000 have picked up the paid version. Total revenue? How bout $13,000 a month.

Sure, it’s not the millions you’ve heard about in the App Store, but Kim has just one among a couple hundred “top” applications that are likely grossing at least as much as his if not more. The app had always done well, but it really took off when it was added to the featured list on the Android Marketplace. “it was netting an average of about $80 – $100/day,” Kim wrote on his blog, “until it became a featured app on the Marketplace. Since then, sales have been phenomenal, netting an average of $435/day, with a one day record of $772 on Valentine’s Day.”

Almost $800 for something that probably didn’t take all that long to code? Why do I write again?

Android is a sausage fest

A little Android.AdMob has compiled some interesting data concerning smartphone usage. One of those fun facts is that the Android population is dominantly male by a vast majority. In fact, 73 percent of Android users are male, while other smartphone platforms remain much closer to 55 percent.

It’s pretty easy to see why. The Droid, Android’s most successful phone to date, was clearly marketed at males. Remember the stealth bombers? The upper-atmosphere spaceship drops? Not exactly your feminine hype.

Among the other stats AdMob compiled was the fact that free app downloads outnumber paid almost 10 to 1. Also, a meager 21 percent of Android users purchase apps on a monthly basis, compared to 50 percent for the iPhone.
