      Nintendo DSi launches today

      Nintendo had updated their very popular DS Lite with the new DSi that launches today in the United States. This is the 3rd iteration of the DS consoles that have done quite well for Nintendo.

      The DSi offers several updates in the hardware department. First, Nintendo has added dual cameras to the handheld; one on the exterior and one on the interior of the frame. This could be a huge development for portable gaming. With the advent of multiple cameras, players have a new way to interact with each other during game play. But Nintendo didn’t stop there. They also added a new sound application that can act as a voice recorder or a music player. This is a nice addition to the hardware that is almost expected in today’s electronics environment. Finally, regarding hardware changes, Nintendo removed the GameBoy game port and added a slot for a SD card. Sorry GameBoy fans, no more playing your old GameBoy games on the DSi. But it will be nice to have extra storage with the SD slot.

      There is a nice software change of note as well. It’s the introduction of DSiWare. DSiWare is similar to WiiWare and comparable to Apple’s app store. The DSiWare shop will be open for developers to put new gaming content for download. And similar to WiiWare, users of the DSi can purchase points to download new content from the online shop. This is a nice addition to the DSi and seems to be the way the industry is going regarding getting new and different content onto their platforms.

      It looks like the DSi will likely be another successful addition to the Nintendo portable gaming sector. The $169.99 price tag is a little steep for me but quite normal to see at launch. I expect that price to go down either right before or right after the holidays this year. If you have a DS Lite and you’re happy with it, I don’t see a great need to upgrade to the DSi right away. I will consider getting one myself after the initial price drop and after I see how successful the DSiWare shop is.

      Bouncing Around the Web

      In case you missed it, here’s what’s Bouncing Around the Web:

      Apple and Stanford University have joined forces to teach an iPhone development class. The course materials and video of the classes will be available through iTunes. Best of all, they are free. This is a great move at keeping the iPhone and iPod Touch app content fresh and new. Just another reason Apple will probably dominate in the mobile phone market.

      iPhone Game Boy Case      What has to be the coolest case I have ever seen for an iPhone is over at engadget. The case looks exactly like a Game Boy. First, I haven’t seen the Game Boy in years and second, it makes me just want to pick it up and play it. The case is more of a tease than anything. I guess it fits right in here at Gadget Teaser.

      While I’m not a fan of the evil empire, I can be a fan of the Yankees new 101 by 59 foot LED display at their new stadium. That thing is enormous. I might have to take a trip to New York just to get a glimpse of it. And hopefully to watch the Yankees lose too.

      Sometimes it’s hard to sift through the millions of websites out there to find the fun, unusual, creative, and especially, the useful ones. And word of mouth can only take you so far. Well, leave it to Gadget Teaser to give you a hand in your search. Once a week, we’ll highlight one of our favorite sites that not everyone knows about. I like to think that we here at Gadget Teaser are performing a public service for you… the avid gadget blog reader the general public.

      Ah woot! What I can I say about one of my favorite sites on the web? Woot is an addiction, a compulsion, and hard habit to break. There’s a strange obsession that happens once you start wooting. It’s weird. I can’t help but check woot every evening at 12pm central. And when that elusive bag of random crap comes up, I act like a fool trying to get my hands on one. Yes, I get all those feelings from a website.

      It is difficult to describe what woot is. It’s an online marketplace for new, used, and usually refurbished items. It’s a site where you always get a great deal on whatever is on sale. Always. The trick is, there is only one item for sale per day. Yes, you read that right. One item per day. It could be anything from an iPod to a TV to set of speakers to a cell phone to a flash drive. Anything. It’s usually some sort of gadget or electronic item which I guess is another reason why I love it so much. The item goes up for sale at 12am central, stays on sale for 24 hours, then a new item goes on sale again the next day. Best of all, $5 flat rate shipping no matter what the item or the quantity. You can buy up to three items at a time but the shipping stays at $5. Even if you buy three 40″ TVs!

      Woot is more than just gadgets. It has branched out to wine.woot and shirt.woot. At wine.woot, great deals can now be had on wines and wine accessories. Shirt.woot offers unique, one-of-a-kind, and custom t-shirt for $10 everyday (free shipping). Just like woot though, only one t-shirt is offered per day. Luckily, if you miss a great design, you can get a previous t-shirt later for $15. The best part about shirt.woot are the derbies. Shirt.woot puts up a contest for designers to submit shirts for. Wooters vote and the best t-shirts are put on sale.

      So woot, wine.woot, shirt.woot, and sellout.woot (links you through yahoo shopping to a secondary woot page) are the sweet sites of the week. They are addicting. Try them at your own risk.

      The Internet sucks on April Fools Day. You can’t take anything seriously. Gmail Autopilot will automatically respond to your emails. Ha ha. That’s a good one. Warner Brothers loves thepiratebay.org. Hardy-har-har. My beloved Woot.com had a legitimate bag of random crap for $3. With $1,000,000.00 shipping. Boy, they sure got me there!

      You know, it’s pretty damn annoying. I don’t want to spend any extra time in my day trying to decipher some idiot company’s pranks. Like why the hell does reddit look like reddigg? I’m tired of it. It’s been played. April 2nd can’t come soon enough.

      It’s time to break through the clutter and get down to business. This weekly post is going to list not the top 10, or the top 5, but the top 3 of anything gadget related. Why the top 3? Because anything more would be watered down.

      So without further ado, here are the top 3 Apps released for the iPhone this week.

      3. DIRECTV

      With the free DIRECTV app you can connect to your home DVR and set it to record something now or in the future. With just a few taps you can search the program guide for movies and shows that are coming up then set any DVR in your home to record it. You can also set it to record Pay Per View content so you can watch it when you get home. Very cool stuff.

      2. MLB.com At Bat 2009

      MLB.com At Bat Lite is great. With it you can get pitch by pitch coverage of live games and keep up on box scores. You can get play-by-play and video highlights shortly after a play is complete. Upgrade to MLB.com At Bat 2009 and you will get all that plus live Gameday Audio broadcasts for every regular season and postseason game. You can even choose between listening to the home team’s broadcast or the away team’s broadcast. $9.99 is a small price to pay for a season’s worth of MLB audio at your fingertips.

      1. Skype

      Skype has finally landed on the iPhone. This app gives you the ability to call any of your Skype contacts for free. Anytime you’re connected via WiFi you have the ability to bring up Skype, search and call your contacts, and most importantly, save your precious minutes. If you’re not connected to WiFi, you can still bring up your contact list and instant message anyone else who is online. So make sure you download the free Skype app for your iPhone; because there is nothing better than calling your friends and family for free.
