WD My DVR Expander Adds 1TB of TiVo Storage

The Western Digital My DVR Expander.Today, Western Digital announced the newest in its line of “My (fill-in-the-blank)” external storage peripherals with the My DVR Expander. The unit is being advertised as “TiVo verified” with options for 500GB and 1TB of expansion.

This is certainly a boon for TiVo users, particularly the HD folks. Consumers should be able to record about 100 hours of HD or 400 hours of standard video on the 1TB drive. Hopefully Western Digital has managed to solve the circuit board failures associated with the My Book series of drives. I’ve heard horror stories involving the drives just powering down mid transfer. Not cool when I’m trying to get my Dexter on.

Ossur Power Knee: First Prosthesis With a Brain?

The Ossur Power Knee.I stumbled across this incredible prosthesis at Engadget and almost cackled with joy. Not because I need one, just because it’s so awesome. The Ossur Power Knee is designed specifically for above-the-knee amputees, utilizing accelerometers and pressure sensors in the foot to provide a thoughtless walking experience. From the vague verbage contained in product descriptions, it sounds like the knee can judge all sorts of terrain, which includes sending muscular feedback to the wearer in the case of inclines and uneven footing. Basically it interfaces with your leg the same way your brain would interface with the muscles and tendons you don’t think about while walking.

The prosthetic is currently in use by Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A full commercial release is expected in 2010.

Warner Bros. Offers HD DVD Trade-In

Red2Blu let's you swap HD DVDs for Blu-ray titles. Now that HD DVD has gone the way of Betamax, early adopters have been looking for ways to get rid of their old discs in favor of Blu-ray. This time last year, Best Buy started picking up the DVDs on their trade-in site for a meager $3 a pop if you also brought them a player.

In an attempt to appease their customer base, Warner Bros. released a website, red2blu.com, which allows consumers to essentially swap their HD DVDs for the same title in Blu-ray. By sending the cover sleeve (even they don’t want the disc) and $4.95/title, plus a few bucks shipping per order, you can swap up to 25 titles per household. Not a bad deal if you ask me. You did ask me, right?

A Home Network Solution

In today’s world, it is almost becoming a requirement to have a networked home. More and more appliances, televisions, gaming consoles, cable and satellite boxes, and even thermostats are requiring access to your home network. And while many of these items can currently use your wireless network, not all can. So what’s a home owner to do for the items that need a faster and more reliable Ethernet connection but don’t have the home wired for it? My suggestion, buy a D-Link PowerLine HD Network Starter Kit.

According to D-Link’s website:

D-Link Powerline HD Network Starter Kit

The D-Link® PowerLine HD Ethernet Adapter (DHP-302) and Starter Kit (DHP-303) take advantage of your home’s existing electrical wiring to create or extend a network. Turn every power outlet into a possible network connection to connect computers, digital media players, and game consoles throughout your home.

This sounds like a great and affordable ($139) solution for any home. No doubt that this is much cheaper than trying to run CAT5 cable all throughout your house. And if you are worried about speed, the website lists the speed at up to 200Mbps which is much faster than any cable or DSL service I know of.

So if you’re in need of a home network solution, save yourself the hassle and the expense of wiring your own home and instead check out D-Link’s Powerline HD Network Starter kit.

Refurb iPhones Go For $149.00

Apple iPhone.AT&T has refurbished versions of both the black and white 3G iPhones for just $149.00 when you sign up for a 2-year contract. This is definitely the best deal on the web for the Apple phone, and will probably entice plenty of folks to get one.

Of course, I’m always skeptical when it comes to pricing things for liquidation. Could this point to the third-generation iPhone? Coupled with the news that AT&T is also selling phones out of contract, I’d give it a definite yes.
