      Samsung Jet Gets 2M Preorders

      Samsung's popular Jet.Just a week ago we were lauding the success of the Palm Pre with its 50,000 unit opening weekend. Earlier today we got news that the iPhone 3GS has sold 1M units at launch, despite having the “smallest” launch for the device to date.

      Samsung enters the fray walking tall and carrying forty pound sledge: the Samsung Jet. According to Samsung, they’ve received 2M preorders for their WinMo smartphone. The Jet runs on the same 800MHz processor as the 3GS, though the iPhones is underclocked. The Jet also has an AMOLED screen and a 5MP camera, two improvements over the iPhone. It comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 installed, which isn’t everyone’s favorite touch platform. An update to 6.5 could be a serious improvement for WinMo users.

      The Jet preorder sales make it the largest handset order Samsung has ever seen. The phone will be available at the end of the month.

      Palm Pre Gets a Date!

      The Palm Pre.Sprint and Palm have officially announced the release of the Palm Pre for June 6, starting at $200 after contract and the included $100 rebate. If you’re worried you won’t be able to get Palm’s new beauty in your area, fret no more. The phone is being sold nationwide starting on the 6th and will be sold in Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and even some Wal-Marts.

      So what do you think of the date? It’s a Saturday for starters, which could mean both the manufacturer and the service provider are hoping for big weekend sales. It’s also two days before Apple’s Keynote Presentation at WWDC where it’s no secret people will be waiting for a very special iPhone announcement. I suppose if you have some sort of buying disorder you might not want to want two days.

      To me it seems like Palm must be a little uneasy about the iPhone refresh. It would be so easy to wait a few days, or even a week, and then pitch the Pre against the iPhone’s shortcomings, like running background apps. They may be planning to do that anyway, but then why have an understated launch 2 days before a potential boon for Apple sales.

      Truth is, I think we all know the iPhone isn’t going anywhere, and pitching the Pre as an “iPhone-killer” would likely turn Palm’s blade against themselves. I’d say the best they can hope for is a load of sales because their device is something different. If we’re lucky, the competition, meager as it may be, will push Apple to improve the product the world loves.

      Zune Phone’s a No Go, No?

      Zune Phone is Bust.Plenty of rumors have been flying this week concerning Microsoft’s hushed “Project Pink” and the advent of a Microsoft/Verizon iPhone rival project. Of course, all of this came on the heels of even more whispers that Apple and Verizon were in discussions for two new iPhone devices, an “iPhone Lite” and a beefier version that could support HD video playback and so forth. Would Microsoft really enter the mobile manufacturing market to compete, though? And would the product be so iPhone-like as to be a Zunephone (I think we know how the iPod/Zune war ended)?

      A Microsoft spokesperson stepped into the fray to set everyone straight…ish. “Microsoft is not going into the phone hardware business. Microsoft is not building a Zune-specific phone.” There you have it, clear as a first-gen iPod screen. Of course, we can gleen plenty of info from a statement like this. If Microsoft won’t make the phone, you can bet your earbuds someone else will. No Zune-specific phone? That’s probably for the best. Windows Mobile is about providing business functionality on a hand-held device. Why turn it into anything less? So Zune will be sitting shotgun on this one. I can think of worse things.
