Photo Courtesy of: Far East Gizmos

Whether or not the vocal constituent of audiophiles who continue to insist that “it just sounds better on vinyl” are completely in the right is a debate that may wage on for years to come, but no matter where you stand on the issue, there is no denying that some albums just feel more natural in vinyl.

They are albums like “Abbey Road,” “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Dark Side of the Moon,” “Loaded,” and “Highway 61 Revisited.” Sure you can own them on CD or digitally, but classics like these, and more, deserve to be owned in their original form, where they maintain that image of artifacts of a musically brilliant age gone by.

For experiencing timeless works such as those, everyone really should own a record player. But, instead of throwing down hundreds of dollars on a bulky hi-fi setup, and more on speakers, why not consider something simpler like the Evergreen DN-84537?

Like other Evergreen models, this player employs a bare basics design that cuts down on space, and also attaches to your computer through a USB cable which allows you to record music to your computer, and take advantage your rig’s speaker system. Where this model stands triumphant though, is in the inclusion of its built in speakers which, combined with the AA battery back-up option, allows for a portable, fully functional record player no matter where you are, and all for the ridiculously low price of under $50.

There are a couple of disadvantages to the Evergreen though. Particularly there’s the lower sound quality you get with the integrated speaker design, and the fact they are currently only available in Japan. So since the import cost for one would kind of defeat the purpose, let’s hope that these players make their way to more of the globe, so everyone will have a chance to experience some of the greatest music of all time in its native format, as conveniently as possible.

While many homeowners find a learned peace and pleasure from mowing their lawns, and some have even turned the act into a source of pride, for many, the task is still one of those constant pains that every week must once again be checked off the to do list.

Of course with football season rapidly approaching (Note: Go Cowboys!), a vast number of American men are going to find their chore time on weekends has been drastically reduced, to the point where that junky old mower may not have the juice left to get everything done in time.

While you could explore alternative methods like bleaching your lawn and salting the earth (Additional Note: Please consult your wife first), what you really need is a powerful mower free of restraints and basic decency. A kind of mower that’s very use is preceded by the use of liquid courage and a thoughtful prayer.

What you need is the heavily modified H2620 lawnmower from Honda.

Designed at the behest of the “Top Gear” crew, who were also tired of the slow process that is mowing the lawn, Honda outfitted one of their standard mowers with an engine from their motorcycle division and, after a few other choice enhancements, eventually came away with a mower packing 110 horsepower, and capable of 0-60 in around four seconds, with a hypothetical top speed of 130 mph.

Hypothetical, of course, because this isn’t exactly the most stable and safe of vehicles, due in large part to its power to weight ratio, which is greater than that of many exotic vehicles. There’s also the issue of the flames it spouts out the side which could cause some serious problems regarding an even cut, not to mention that nasty house fire issue.

Sadly we can all assume that this mower will never see the mass production light of day, and instead will be relegated to the “Top Gear” track, and the dreams of many homeowners. Still, it’s not every day that a mower that could make Tim Taylor blush is crafted and, regardless of whether or not the majority of the planet will ever use it, that’s a day to take notice of.

Brilliance comes in the oddest forms sometimes. While it’s immediately recognizable through acts like splitting the atom, inventions like the telephone, or literary works like “Infinite Jest,” it can also come in smaller, more practical, more modest forms.

By that rationale, the pedestal stand by CTA Digital is brilliant in an as seen on TV way. It’s a modern day take on the toilet paper holder, as it holds not just a roll of toilet paper, but your iPad 2,3, or 4 as well through an adjustable neck. Not only does it offer a space saving alternative to your magazine rack and other bathroom installments (I’ve heard an idea of downloading a mirror app, for double duty touch-ups), but it allows you the freedom to use your favorite tech device while…on the job without any of that unfortunate hand fumbling, or cumbersome need to set it down.

The asking price of $42.50 may be kind of steep for a device that probably has a number of homemade alternatives available, but if you’ve ever experienced the burden, and occasional horror, of trying to use your iPad on the toilet in a manner befitting a supposedly intelligent human being, you’ll immediately recognize the value of a professionally crafted aide.

Just be warned that this will make you appear to be a pretty serious pooper to visitors.

The Galaxy S3 proved to be a hard phone not to love, as Samsung managed to take everything they did right , and learn from the things they did wrong, with their previous releases and craft a smartphone so sleek and versatile it caused not only onlookers, but longer term users as well to consistently say “whoa” in its presence.

Of course, since it more than had the sales figures to match its technical accomplishments, there was never any doubt that Samsung would be hard at work on an S4 for 2013. Now though, the rumors that are starting to pile up about the S4 are making it increasingly apparent that the only thing obvious about the next generation phone, is its eventual release.

A few of the news bits coming out like the rumored better camera and bigger screen (5 inches is the theory), suspected April or May release date, and faster processor are all unconfirmed, but seem inevitable. The more interesting theories are actually the ones leaking from Samsung’s camp, including the idea that thanks to the use of OLED panels, the display on the S4 might be unbreakable. The more plastic based OLED panel would allow for an incredibly durable alternative to the traditional glass set up and, while it may be the bane of cell phone repair centers, would be a welcome feature to consumers that can’t seem to stop spiking their phones, and end up living with a cracked screen.

Even more intriguing is word that the use of OLED panels might also allow Samsung to create a truly flexible cell phone display that will allow the user to bend, twist, fold, and roll their phone with ease. Not that the S3 was ever a burden (that would be the Galaxy Note), but the thought of being able to contort your phone to any position is not only exciting, but in combination with the unbreakable screen also sets up what could be the most reliable piece of hardware every released in the field.

These are both just rumors still, and might not even come into play until the S5, but it’s looking like Samsung is working under the motivation that in the smartphone world, 2nd is no place at all.

It’s time to break through the clutter and get down to business. This weekly post is going to list not the top 10, or the top 5, but the top 3 of anything gadget related. Why the top 3? Because anything more would be watered down.

So without further ado, here are the top 3 Wii games.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Combining some of the best graphics on the Wii with an amazing story and game play, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess makes the top 3 on this list. What’s most amazing about this game is that it was actually created for the GameCube and then ported over for the Wii. With how smooth the look and feel of the game are, you would never know it. The controls combine just enough physical motion with classic controller action to make it enjoyable. As far as the story and difficulty, there is not much to complain about. You have a whole world to explore that’s hard enough to want to consult an online guide, but not so hard that you have to. Pick up Twilight Princess and you won’t be disappointed you did.

2. Super Mario Galaxy

What many Wii owners and reviewers consider the best game for the Wii, made number two on this list. Super Mario Galaxy has the best 3-dimensional game play ever. The transitions from right-side-up to up-side-down and everything in between are flawless. Gravity makes perfect sense in this game even when you have to defy it over and over again. That combined with dozens of worlds to explore and re-explore makes this one of the best ever in the Nintendo family. One of my favorite things about Galaxy is that each level is a manageable size. You don’t have to sit down for hours to advance the game. But with how good Super Mario Galaxy is, you probably will end up playing for hours on end.

1. Mario Kart Wii

Surprised to see Mario Kart Wii at number one? Don’t be. While Super Mario Galaxy might be the best single game on the Wii, Mario Kart Wii doesn’t have a finish line. Long after I beat Galaxy, I’m still playing Kart. Why, you ask? Because when you take one of the greatest game franchises ever, add in bikes and another sixteen amazing courses, then top it off with nearly perfect online play, you get a huge hit. Kart doesn’t get old because of the Nintendo WFC. Racing against real people and friends from all over the nation and the world makes Kart new and different every time. And one thing that Kart does better than any title I know is that it levels out the playing field enough with the combo boxes to keep the most skilled players interested while giving the novice a fighting chance. So for hours upon hours of new and exciting play, Mario Kart Wii is the number one game on the Wii.

It’s time to break through the clutter and get down to business. This weekly post is going to list not the top 10, or the top 5, but the top 3 of anything gadget related. Why the top 3? Because anything more would be watered down.

So without further ado, here are the top 3 free music apps for the iPhone.

3.	American Public Media’s – Public Radio Tuner
You don’t have to be a nerd to enjoy public radio. I do. And this app provides access to hundreds of public radio stations which will keep you up-to-date with the most honest and unbiased take on news available. So whether you prefer to listen to “This American Life,” “Marketplace,” or “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me,” this app will hook you up with free streaming NPR anywhere you go.

2.	Shazam Entertainment Ltd.’s – Shazam
Who hasn’t ever been listening to the radio wondering what the name and artist of the song is you’re listening to. Well, use Shazam and you’ll never wonder again. That’s right, with Shazam you only have to open up the app, click “Tag Now” and in about 10 seconds you’ll have the artist name, song name, album name and more. You’ll also have links to download the song from iTunes, watch the video on YouTube or read reviews. Now that is sweet.

1.	Pandora Media Inc.’s – Pandora Radio
Traditional music stations should be scared because with Pandora Radio you can get personalized radio stations for free that stream directly to your iPhone. No commercials. No bad music. Just create a station based on an artist or song that you like and Pandora instantly starts streaming music that matches your taste. Best of all… no commercials! Sounds crazy, I know. Pandora Radio even learns. Don’t like a song being played? Give it a thumbs down and never hear it again. Plus, I’ve never had an issue with songs skipping or slow playback, even while streaming over Edge. For all these reasons, Pandora Radio is the best free music app on the iPhone and also the reason I will be cancelling my XM account.
