Browser Wars… con’t

Gadget Teaser’s take on the browser wars started here. As you know, we here at Gadget Teaser are loyal fans of Firefox, but it doesn’t take much for us to make a switch. Especially when news like this comes in from Pwn2Own:

Browser Wars

A recent contest at CanSecWest, an event that brings together some of the most skilled experts in the security community, has demonstrated that the three most popular browser are susceptible to security bugs despite the vigilance and engineering prowess of their creators. Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer were all exploited during the Pwn2Own competition that took place at the conference. Google’s Chrome browser, however, was the only one left standing—a victory that security researchers attribute to its innovative sandbox feature.

Well isn’t that interesting. I never expected Google’s Chrome would be the last man standing. In fact, I expected all to go down but perhaps not that fast. This coverage solidified a few things for me.

Number 1: stay away from Safari. One of the hackers went after Safari and Mac OS X first because “he believes that it is the easiest to exploit.” Not a good sign for Apple.

Number 2: no browser is totally safe. When they allow the use of plugins on the second day of competition, I’m sure Chrome will go down as well.

And therefore Number 3: no matter which browser you do use, you need to take care and consideration of where you browse and the content you keep. Keep your cache clean and clear out your cookies and saved passwords from time to time. It’s your data the hackers are after, use a little more care and you should be safe.

So after all that being said, will I be switching to Chrome? I’m not sure yet. But I am giving it another look.

Sweet Site of the Week – mint.com

Sometimes it’s hard to sift through the millions of websites out there to find the fun, unusual, creative, and especially, the useful ones. And word of mouth can only take you so far. Well, leave it to Gadget Teaser to give you a hand in your search. Once a week, we’ll highlight one of our favorite sites that not everyone knows about. I like to think that we here at Gadget Teaser are performing a public service for you… the avid gadget blog reader the general public.
mint.com
This week’s Sweet Site of the Week is: mint.com

If you’re looking for a place to track all your personal finances, set and monitor reasonable budgets, and find ways to save money at the same time, then try mint.com.

Mint.com is a safe and anonymous website that tracks your spending and budgets. It performs most of the tasks that you get from expensive off the shelf software in a free, accessible, and secure environment. In fact, I find it’s easier to use.

First, the setup is a breeze. Just create an account and in just a few minutes you can add all your checking, savings, credit cards, loans, and retirement accounts into the system. You can also add your assets like your home and your car. In fact, mint.com will calculate your home value for you, sum it up along with all your other assets and debts, then give you an estimate of your total worth. Pretty cool.

After the initial set up, mint.com takes over. It will give you suggestions for ways to save money. After you set yourself some budget goals, you can create all kinds of alerts to make sure you are keeping on track. Mint.com will also send you weekly or daily updates regarding what’s happening across all your finances. I even got an email once letting me know that my credit card interest rate was increasing. The email told me I should call and see what’s up and even provided me with the 800 number for that card. That sold me right there.

Oh, and for those of you wondering why I haven’t mentioned Apple in this post, mint.com has a great iPhone app too. Free, of course.

So check out mint.com. You, and your wallet, will be glad you did.

Sweet Site of the Week – dealcatcher.com

Sometimes it’s hard to sift through the millions of websites out there to find the fun, unusual, creative, and especially, the useful ones. And word of mouth can only take you so far. Well, leave it to Gadget Teaser to give you a hand in your search. Once a week, we’ll highlight one of our favorite sites that not everyone knows about. This week’s Sweet Site of the Week is: dealcatcher.com

I can honestly tell you that I never miss a deal or a coupon or a discount when I purchase online. And I can also honestly tell you that, for me, a very good portion of those deals, coupons, and discounts are found on dealcatcher.com.

Dealcatcher.com scours the internet for deals on everything from PCs to flowers and from clothes to diamonds. There is nothing dealcatcher.com doesn’t cover. Take, for instance, Dell. Did you know that Dell always has a sale going on? No really, always. As I’m writing this, dealcather.com informed me that Dell has savings of 15 – 25% on desktops, notebooks, and all-in-ones. Target has $5 off a $50 purchase. Old Navy has free shipping on orders over $75. There’s stuff like this all over the site.

But dealcatcher.com is more than just sale items and discounts. They also have printable coupons, Sunday ads, rebates, and a price compare engine. I used price compare to check the price of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 from this week’s Top 3. Instantly I got the bottom line price (total price plus tax plus shipping) from 7 different stores.

Now you know why dealcatcher.com is our Sweet Site of the Week. I like to save money, and I think you do too.

Browser Wars

Browser Wars

I’m an avid Firefox user. I have been for years. And there are many reasons for my love affair. First, I enjoy the ability to install add-ons like “Adblock Plus,” “All-in-One Sidebar,” and especially “Foxmarks.” Also, Firefox gives me the freedom to tweak settings inside the browser’s core which can change my interaction with it, as well as its overall speed. Finally, I definitely notice that the browser uses less of my PC’s memory and always releases it properly when I close it. What’s not to like about Firefox?

So, it might surprise you to know that I am always willing to try the next new thing in web browsers. I’ll install Opera and try it out for a few weeks then go back to Firefox. What’s that? Google came out with a new browser called Crome? Sure, I’ll install that too and see what all the hubbub is about. Since everyone on the planet seems wired to think anything Apple does is great, I end up installing Safari as well. Sadly, even though I installed all those browsers, I still end up using IE to check my work email. I’m sorry but for some strange reason Microsoft’s webmail client works better inside Microsoft’s web browser. Crazy, I know.

For those of you out there wondering what the current advantages and disadvantages of each of these browsers are, maximumpc.com has put together a great list comparing all the browsers. And they even took it one further by comparing what the future releases will look like.

Anyone who may have thought the death of Netscape would signal the end of the browser wars, boy were they mistaken. In fact, it could be argued that it was at that point it all began. It didn’t take long for Mozilla’s Firefox to emerge from Netscape Navigator’s ashes, and over time, Firefox would win over enthusiasts with a potent combination of speed, security, and an unprecedented level of customization.

But what started as a two-man battle is quickly growing into all-out warfare. Prepare to be overwhelmed by an onslaught of new browser releases in the coming months as Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple, Opera Software, and Google all vie to provide your vehicle for navigating the web. Each one brings something new to the table, whether it be blazing fast performance or a unique feature-set. Don’t worry if you haven’t been paying attention – we jump in the trenches with whole lot of them and get to know each one on a personal basis.

So there you have it. Read it and make your own decision. Don’t just use IE because it comes installed with Windows. Try something new on and see if it fits.

As for me, I’ll be constantly trying whatever is the latest and greatest thing to come out in the browser wars. And then, well… in all honesty… within a week going back and using Firefox about 95% of the time.

The Sweet Site of the Week – SeatGuru.com

Sometimes it’s hard to sift through the millions of websites out there to find the fun, unusual, creative, and especially, the useful ones. And word of mouth can only take you so far. Well, leave it to Gadget Teaser to give you a hand in your search. Once a week, we’ll highlight one of our favorite sites that not everyone knows about. SeatGuru

And now, our first Sweet Site of the Week: SeatGuru.com

SeatGuru.com is not a site you will use everyday. However, when you do, you will be thankful. Trust me!

Next time you have travel scheduled, check out SeatGuru.com before selecting your seats. Just bring up the website, find the carrier you booked your ticket with, and select the aircraft you will be flying on. Unless you’re a part of the mile-high club, this is when the magic happens. You immediately get a graphical representation of all the seats on your plane along with a guide on which seats are good, and which to avoid. You can also hover over seats to get more details about why they are good, poor, or have mixed reviews.

On a personal note, had I know about this site before my 9 hour flight to Sweden a while back, I would have realized that the exit row seat I selected was right next to the bathroom and that for the entire 9 hours I was bumped by just about every person on the plane on the way to the bathroom and for about 90% of those individuals I had to let them know how to open the bathroom door because it would stick a little bit and they would stand there for a good 30 seconds messing with the door and causing a commotion if I didn’t say anything. Did I mention that I couldn’t sleep because of all of this? I’m not at all bitter though. I just wish I had known about SeatGuru.com earlier.

So there you have it. SeatGuru.com is the Sweet Site of the Week; because not all exit rows are created equal.
