SanDisk releases 32GB microSDHC card
Posted by Jeff Morgan (03/22/2010 @ 11:03 pm)
If it weren’t 2010, this would sound like something out of a science fiction movie. “You’re basically talking about an entire jukebox on a flash memory chip the size of your pinkie fingernail.” That’s what SanDisk vice president Eric Bone had to say about his company’s newest microSDHC capacity: 32GB. That’s 7,000 songs. Ten hours of uncompressed HD video. That’s pretty damn incredible.
This is great news for people with a microSD slot on their favorite device. The new capacity was achieved by stacking 8 memory units of 4GB a piece on top of one another, all in a package that’s less than 1mm thick. For a more detailed explanation on what the microengineering process involves, head over to Gizmodo.
The new card will run you a cool $200. That’s a lot of money to spend on something smaller than a dime, so you better be careful with it. Word to the wise – don’t leave it in the open if you have an animal of any kind. I puppysat for a friend this weekend and that little guy ate everything. Watching a puppy drag around a boot that’s twice his size is funny. Digging through the puppy’s poop to find your new SD card is not.
Amazon Enters The Accessories Market
Posted by Jeff Morgan (09/20/2009 @ 7:41 pm)
Amazon’s seen some relative success in the electronic hardware market (though how much success they just won’t say) and it looks like the company would like to see a little more. The online everything store is launching its own line of electronics accessories called AmazonBasics.
So far the site only has storage media and cabling, but you can also find guides for everyday setup and a troubleshooting. Amazon is also showing off new “Frustration-Free” packaging that supposed to be “easy to open and easy to recycle.”
The site, on the other hand, is probably frustration-inducing for companies selling marked up cables through Amazon. Those guys just won’t be able to match the $8 HDMI cables without compromising their precious perceived quality. Amazon must see some pretty nice cash down the line to be willing to fleece old partners like this.
Put 8GBs On Your Wrist

This was originally posted by Mr. Rick Broida over at the Cheapskate Blog. If you aren’t a regular reader, I highly recommend him. He’s consistently got the best deals on seriously useful tech, and as is the case with this one, useful tech with massive geek appeal.
The gadget in question is an 8GB flash drive tucked into a Livestrong-styled rubber bracelet for just $12.35. Originally the bracelet came in at $26.99, but thanks to a recent price drop and a coupon code listed directly on the page, you can have one for under $13. Nevermind that it’s a great way to show your geek pride, or smuggle sensitive pictures away from your friend’s laptop, it’s a boatload of storage for next to nothing. Working at McD’s would net you one of these bad boys in under an hour and a half.
It ships from Meritline, which has given some folks pleasure, some folks pain. You can also expect shipping to take about 2 weeks, which might be a dealbreaker for some. May I remind you, though, that it’s 8GBs. And it’s $12.35. Just go buy one.

Apple Adds 2TB Time Capsule
Posted by Jeff Morgan (07/30/2009 @ 1:18 pm)
Apple’s just announced a new Time Capsule, the company’s combination 802.11n router and NAS drive, bumping the storage capacity to a full 2TB. The new drive comes in at a whopping $499.
The more interesting news is the price reduction Cupertino’s thrown to the 1TB version. You can pick up the lesser version for just $299, down from the new 2TB’s price of $499. That’s a massive reduction, and it certainly makes me wonder what kind of margin they were reaping on the device. Of course, storage is so cheap now you can imagine it was huge.
The device hasn’t changed other than the storage capacity. What I’d really like to see is a RAID capable drive for the truly storage savvy among us. 2TB of offsite storage is great, but what of your backup’s backup? I suppose that’s how they’ll try to sell MobileMe.
WD My DVR Expander Adds 1TB of TiVo Storage

Today, Western Digital announced the newest in its line of “My (fill-in-the-blank)” external storage peripherals with the My DVR Expander. The unit is being advertised as “TiVo verified” with options for 500GB and 1TB of expansion.
This is certainly a boon for TiVo users, particularly the HD folks. Consumers should be able to record about 100 hours of HD or 400 hours of standard video on the 1TB drive. Hopefully Western Digital has managed to solve the circuit board failures associated with the My Book series of drives. I’ve heard horror stories involving the drives just powering down mid transfer. Not cool when I’m trying to get my Dexter on.
