      Free iPhone 4 bumper cases coming your way

      Apple iPhone 4 bumper.Well, there you have it folks. Apple didn’t exactly do what some expected (read: massive recall) but it did do something that should at least help relieve some of the, ah, anguish around its latest iPhone model.

      The details are pretty simple – you have an iPhone, you get a bumper. If Apple is out of bumpers, you can pick another case from a predetermined selection. If you already bought a bumper you will be reimbursed and lastly, you can only take advantage of all of this until September 30th, at which time Apple will determine whether it should extend the offer or come up with another solution.

      It’s better than the first explanation, right?

      Apple to hold iPhone 4 press conference Friday

      Apple announced that it will be holding a press conference regarding the iPhone 4 tomorrow afternoon. Though no one knows exactly what the event is about, it’s a safe bet there will be a mix of good news and bad – sales numbers and hopefully the truth about the antenna situation.

      As I’ve said before, I’m not experiencing the antenna trouble many are. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, though. A lot of people have had problems, some of my friends even, and there are a whole host of reasons that could occur.

      TechCrunch had a guest post from Steve Cheney, a former engineer and web programmer, who offers a comprehensive solution to Apple’s technical problems and the PR nightmare that came as a result. His technical solution is to coat the steel band that surrounds the phone, a solution many have tried with rubber bands, nail polish, and Apple’s lauded bumper cases. After reaching out to iFixIt, Cheney discovered that Apple may already be using some sort of coating, which could explain the inconsistency of the antenna problems.

      Whatever the problem or the solution, hopefully tomorrow will offer more than “our signal strength calculation was a bit off.”

      Netflix sneaks past Hulu

      Hulu vs Netflix.

      Netflix and Hulu started dueling for streaming dominance some time ago, and for the most part Hulu has been winning that fight. It looks like Netflix may have taken a leg up, though, and I’m hoping it stays that way.

      According to comScore, Netflix barely edged past Hulu in unique visitors this past month. I’ve really enjoyed Netflix streaming service, but the company needs to get up to current seasons if it wants to give Hulu a serious run for it. One of my favorite shows, Party Down (which none of you were watching, which is why it got the ax – shame on you), had current season streaming from Netflix and I watched it every week. It’s a fantastic alternative to a cable subscription, which tends to just fill my living room with a lot of noise.

      Hulu’s trying to keep the top spot with Hulu+, granting access to full current seasons and some legacy episodes for a fee. The company’s ad structure could really hold it back, especially when competing with the Netflix platform.

      Amazon looks to hook college students

      Amazon box.A couple years back I took the free trial of Amazon Prime and good god did I abuse it. Of course, that’s what Amazon hopes for. You get free two-day shipping and you buy all kinds of shit you don’t need just so it can arrive quickly. It is a cathartic experience.

      Amazon is hoping to lure college students with the same deal. To take advantage of the deal, all you need is a .edu email address and have yourself enrolled in at least one college course. My girlfriend actually discovered this the other day by accident and got way too excited about it. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing an inordinate number of packages arriving over the next few days.

      So, college students, consider yourselves warned. Yeah, you save $79 on the service, but you’ll blow past that number in about a week of unnecessary purchases.

      App Inventor gives non-programmers a toolkit for making Android apps

      Google unveiled a new Android product today that is bound to make all of the wannabe app developers in the world happy (that’s not meant to be disparaging – I’m a wannabe myself). It’s called App Inventor, and it’s basically a GUI for designing Android applications.

      For the best idea of what this thing is, check out the video below. While “hellopurr” may not be the most creative use, I’m sure the creatives of the world can come up with some pretty cool stuff. This thing alone makes me wish I had an Android phone. I love the iPhone, and the iPhone 4 has been really good to me unlike many others, but the way this opens up the Android platform is really cool. Sure, a lot of the applications that get made will be really, really crappy. But there will be good ones, and who’s to say the good ones can’t get picked up by more prominent developers and given full support?

      On the whole, I think this is a great play by Google and will certainly give them even more cred with the nerd world. Nicely done.
