Bouncing Around the Web

In case you missed it, here’s what’s Bouncing Around the Web:

Microsoft BingBing has more market share than Yahoo? You have to be freaking kidding me. Yahoo has been around for ages, has name recognition, and what I thought was a strong base of users. Apparently none of that matters when Microsoft starts advertising its new search engine. Do you think the execs at yahoo are kicking themselves for not accepting the $44.6 billion dollar bid back in 2008? You bet your ass they are.

VW lovers and mini-van enthusiasts rejoice! The VW Routan is going to come with built in Wi-Fi. With a starting price of $29 per month, I imagine it will be an easy sell. Of course, this is just the start of things to come. Everything is going to be its own Wi-Fi hot spot in the future. But for now, having kids just to buy a Routan will not only keep Brooke Shields happy, but also the gadgeteers in the family.

I don’t even know what to say about the new Reebok Vector O Bat. First, is this thing street legal? Because if you ask any young pitcher what’s missing in baseball, I’m sure his first reaction would be to have the baseball coming even faster at his head when it comes off the bat. My prediction? Pain.

What Does Walt Mossberg Know?

Walt.Probably a lot more than you or I, to be frank. Mossberg, famed author of the weekly WSJ column Personal Technology, has recently put together a review of the Palm Pre, shedding some of his tech angel dust on what could be a lackluster launch.

Mossberg seems to truly like the Pre, like most of the of the other reviews we’ve seen. And why not? The phone is solid, if a bit small, and the OS is robust. Give developers a few months and the Pre could become a very handy device, if it can sell enough units to remain afloat. But there is some thinly veiled (sometimes just plain direct) iPhone news within Mossberg’s review.

“Unfortunately for Palm, Apple has both a new iPhone operating system and new iPhone hardware coming, likely available within a month, that could obviate [copy and paste, MMS, universal search],” writes Mossberg. I hate to say this man’s word is law, but if there’s anyone mainlining tech news, it’s Walt. Mossberg has historically let little things like release dates slip, always without enough specificity to say he’s violated his press embargoes. If Walt’s right, Monday could bring the announcement we’ve all been waiting for, with hands-on access to the next-gen iPhone in just a few weeks.

Alereon Wants You To Sync Your iPhone Wirelessly

Alereon.I think I want that too. Alereon has been trying to push wireless USB for a while now, a cause their new device will surely help.

The device (referred to henceforth as “the device”) remains unnamed and unphotographed, which makes me wonder why they made the announcement. From what they say, though, the device plugs into your iPhone or iPod touch charge port and allows you to sync up with iTunes wirelessly. Pretty snazzy. It also offers some additional battery power to make sure you get a good sync.

Apparently future iterations of the device will allow you to stream video and pics to TVs, also wirelessly. Of course, no one has any idea what the thing looks like, how much it will cost, or pretty much anything else. The idea, though, seems pretty cool.

Color Kindle is Years Away

Color Kindle concept. As soon as the Kindle hit the market, people started talking about a full color version, but according to Jeff Bezos, they’ll have to wait. Years. He can’t say how many.

I’m not entirely surprised. The e-ink screen technology doesn’t directly adapt to a color format, which means developing a new display medium for the device. We all know how long that can take. Most concepts for such a display are just that: concepts. Perhaps the best one from Philips is still FAR from production, particularly in something like a Kindle.

Bezos has also reconfirmed that Amazon will not release any specific sort of sales numbers for the Kindle. It’s obviously not because they don’t care. I guess they just don’t want us to know.

Verizon to Sell Palm Pre, Storm 2 In the Next 6 Months

Palm Powered VerizonThe latest from Lowell McAdam, top exec for the Verizon/Vodafone venture, has Verizon selling the Palm Pre and the Blackberry Storm in the next “6 months or so.” The Storm 2 is no big surprise. Plenty of people have had their hands on that things for weeks. But the Pre, too? We knew Sprint’s exclusivity contract was short, but 6 months hadn’t even crossed my mind. Earlier this week AT&T announced similar plans to snatch up the Pre, but made no projection as to when.

This really shakes things up, both for Palm and Sprint. For Palm, it could mean new life. I know plenty of people who don’t have an iPhone because of AT&T. Verizon could be enough to make them consider the sleek Palm smartphone as an alternative. For Sprint, though, this is like a cancer diagnosis. The company bled more than a million customers in the last quarter of 2008. If Palm’s launch stock is as scrawny as rumors say, they could be out of phones and out of exclusivity with Palm before they have a chance to dig their toes in. Could Sprint bounce back from having their most-hyped phone on Verizon? I wouldn’t hold my breath for that one.
