iPhone OS 4: FINALLY

iPhone OS 4The world got a look at the upcoming changes to the iPhone OS today and it seems there was just one response: FINALLY. Finally, the iPhone will have the ability to multitask. Finally, you can organize your apps into folders and customize the background. Finally, mail will support attachments for third-party apps, threaded conversations, and easier inbox switching. Finally, finally, finally.

I know, it seems surreal. A lot of these features have been on other platforms for months, years in some cases. The multitasking support is really the best of the update, bringing the iPhone in line with WebOS and Android. It does make me wonder when we’ll see new hardware. The ad copy for the new iPhone’s bigger battery for that great multitasking feature practically writes itself.

For now, you can keep an eye on Apple’s official site for iPhone OS 4. The OS is available in closed beta for developers. Expect more feature leaks soon.

John Gruber calls WSJ iPhone rumors ‘lame’

iPhone 4?The Wall Street Journal claimed to have picked up on some info on the new iPhone, namely that there is one and that it will release to Verizon this year. Great work, guys. I bet no one else saw that coming. John Gruber shares my lack of enthusiasm about the report, mainly because it has no new information. It is, in his words, “WSJ’s Lame Entry in the iPhone Rumors Game.”

He doesn’t stop there, though. He goes on to list a few prospective features for iPhone 4, some very nice prospective features.

And they have no actual details of the next-generation iPhone. Nothing. Not the A4-family CPU system-on-a-chip. Not the 960 × 640 double-resolution display. Not the second front-facing camera. Not even the third-party multitasking in iPhone OS 4. All they have is that there’s going to be a new iPhone this summer, period. Thanks for the scoop, Yukari Iwatani Kane.

That’s not a bad list of specs for a potential iPhone candidate. In fact, it sounds just like a spec list Apple might embrace. I don’t know if Gruber knows something we don’t, but it certainly seems that way.

Has GeoHot already cracked the iPad?

George Hotz with an iPhone.George Hotz, the young man responsible for the initial crack on the iPhone, may have put together a hack to unlock any iPhone OS device, including the iPad. Well, he thinks so anyway. There’s obviously no way to prove it until the iPad comes out and Mr. Hotz isn’t willing to give out a release date for the new crack.

The hack is a software-only exploit that allows jailbreaking of iPhone OS devices with just a simple click. Here’s the word from GeoHot himself:

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.

Don’t ask about a release date. You won’t make it happen any sooner.

There you have it. Wired had a phone interview with Hotz during which he said he may release the hack the day the iPad releases but that he would wait to see what the iPhone hacking community does. Here’s hoping for a launch day release.

Contract free iPhones almost guarantee a new model this summer

iPhone 3GS.The internet just about blew up the other day when word dropped that Apple would be selling contract-free iPhones at unsubsidized prices. There were rumors that the handsets would be unlocked as well, but that was just a rumor. If you’ll remember, this happened last year, just before the launch of the iPhone 3GS. The idea is to get rid of as much inventory as possible. It’s not easy to sell those expensive handsets, but some of the folks that can send of them overseas or feel like running them on T-Mobile will pick them up.

The news virtually guarantees a new iPhone model in the coming summer. What other reason would Apple have for selling unsubsidized handsets? The smart money says there will be a fire sale on subsidized 3GS models, just like there was on the 3G. Would you pay $99 for a 3GS on AT&T? Yeah, I thought you would.

Apple to ban all screen protectors from its own stores

iPhone screen protector.According to iLounge, Apple has instituted a ban against all screen protectors in its online store and retail locations. That’s screen protectors of any type, folks, whether its a film or integrated into some sort of case. I really have no clue why it would do this unless some marketing genius sad, “Hey Steve, we tout our great screens and then sell stuff to protect those screens. Isn’t that a mixed message?” Why no one smacked that guy and said, “Dumbass, those are some of our most popular accessories,” is beyond me.

It’s not that Apple is ordering case manufacturers to cease and desist. Those products simply won’t be available under an Apple roof any longer. It’s really an odd move considering the popularity of sleeves, cases, anti-glare films and the like. Obviously people will keep buying these things, they just won’t be buying them from Apple. Does that sound crazy to anyone else?
