Orange CEO confirms Apple tablet

Orange's Stephane Richard.Orange’s CEO, Stephane Richard, was extremely candid regarding the Apple tablet over the weekend. He was on a radio show speaking with Jean Pierre Elkabbach, a French journalist, for radio Europe 1.

Elkabbach wasn’t even probing all that hard, he simply stated that Apple was planning to release a tablet, to which Richard agreed. With a webcam? Yes. And will Orange users benefit from it? Sure!

They are going to benefit from the web cam, they are going to be able to, in effect, transmit images in real time. We are going to modernize, in essence, the video phone that we knew a few years ago… the size of the resolution, and the quality of the resolution will be better, and it will be available to all in France.

So we have one more person confirming the existence of a tablet we’ve all known exists for while. There’s no new information here, so just move along folks. Nothing to see.

Apple acquires Quattro Wireless

Apple acquires Quattro Wireless.Apple dropped $275 million to enter the world of mobile advertising today. The company purchased Quattro Wireless, one of AdMob’s direct competitors.

Though you may have never heard of it, Quattro has done some big business with some big names. The company has worked with CBS, Univision, and the NFL to deliver mobile ads across several platforms. This is a big move for Apple, another in a string of acquisitions that positions it for direct competition with Google. Given Apple’s history of going after the industry giant, it could be an interesting fight.

Here’s the email Apple sent to BGR confirming the deal:

Happy New Year from Quattro Wireless!

We are thrilled to let you know that Apple has acquired Quattro. We want to share with you our excitement about this news and what it means for our customers.

We have built our business by enabling advertisers to reach the right consumers across the mobile web and in applications. We remain focused on delivering more engaging, relevant and useful ads to mobile devices, and improving the measurement and execution of digital campaigns. Together with Apple, we look forward to developing exciting new opportunities in the future that will benefit our customers.

For now, the offerings and services you receive from Quattro Wireless will not change. We will continue to operate the Quattro Wireless network across all devices and platforms. Your client and support teams will remain the same, and you can continue to expect the world-class service we are proud to deliver to our customers.

We look forward to working with you during this exciting time.

Has Apple already scheduled WWDC 2010?

Moscone Center in San Francisco.AppleInsider is reporting that Apple may have already locked in dates for WWDC 2010. A calendar listing at the Moscone Center in San Francisco shows a “Corporate Event” from June 28th to July 2nd, a name that has designated Apple events in the past.

The date also coincides with the launch of the original iPhone. Since that launch, Apple has made major iPhone announcements at each consecutive WWDC. The rumor this year is that we’ll finally see the phone make the jump to multiple carriers in the US, though it’s not clear who that could be. Most people think Verizon, but the CDMA standard is not exactly iPhone friendly. T-Mobile would be a much easier choice, but it’s also much smaller.

You can’t make mention of WWDC without bringing up the iPhone SDK conference that happens some time in March. Think we’ll see OS 4.0?

Psystar’s fat lady has sung

Psystar box.Psystar is officially shutting down. The company attorney, whose name is Eugene Action by the way, told news sources that the company would be firing all eight of its employees, putting an end to all manner of copyright infringement.

Action said the company is still planning to appeal a federal judge’s recent ruling on the matter, which encouraged Psystar to shut down as soon as possible. It’s been a year and a half, and I’m not totally clear where all of Psystar’s money is coming from. There is no way in hell they’re going to win this appeal, a sentiment I’ve shared with you before, so I’m going to leave this news as it stands today.

Psystar’s done. Apple wins. The end.

Psystar gets injunctified

OS X running on a PC.A federal court has granted Apple’s motion for permanent injunction against Psystar, a decision that not only protects current hardware and software but all future versions as well. Pending an appeal, something I can guarantee won’t succeed, the company has until the New Year to cease and desist on selling, copying, modifying, and doing whatever else it was doing with Apple property.

Psystar tried to keep Rebel EFI, the software that allows you to install OS X on the machine of your choice, out of the injunction. The judge made it clear, though, that Psystar should just comply without too much question.

“Psystar will be selling Rebel EFI at its peril, and risks finding itself held in contempt if its new venture falls within the scope of the injunction.”

Sounds pretty cut and dry to me. Of course, I don’t know how you could delude yourself into thinking you were in the right in this situation. All of this stuff belongs to Apple, and Rebel EFI is just open-source software that Psystar has put in a box.
