I stumbled across this incredible prosthesis at Engadget and almost cackled with joy. Not because I need one, just because it’s so awesome. The Ossur Power Knee is designed specifically for above-the-knee amputees, utilizing accelerometers and pressure sensors in the foot to provide a thoughtless walking experience. From the vague verbage contained in product descriptions, it sounds like the knee can judge all sorts of terrain, which includes sending muscular feedback to the wearer in the case of inclines and uneven footing. Basically it interfaces with your leg the same way your brain would interface with the muscles and tendons you don’t think about while walking.
The prosthetic is currently in use by Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A full commercial release is expected in 2010.
